i have a 4 port router

is there anything to stop me plugging in a 4 port hub into this so i can connect 4 rio recivers into the router s well as to empegs and computer

I assume that the one line going to the hub is limited to 100mbps so therefore i only get 33 to each machine

Right. If it's just a hub and not a switch, it'll share the bandwidth between them. Since it's 10Base-T, that means 3.3mbps per port, though in actuality it'll be unlikely that all 4 will be sending/receiving at the same time. If only one or two of them is communicating, those one or two will split the available 10mbps (minus overhead for ethernet collisions and the like.) I suspect for MP3 traffic, you won't notice any major problems, as 3.3mbps is still a lot higher than MP3 bitrates.

Yeah, what he said -- the 10Mbps is maximum combined bandwidth -- it doesn't have to be an even split between each of the ports.

Nope. 4 port router and 4 port hub gives you 7 ports. You only need one cable between the two, not one in each direction. Not sure if that gives you enough ports for what you want, though.

Oh, my router has a separate port for daisy-chaining to another hub... I think it can do so without tying up another port. Paul, double check that you don't have one of those.

That doesn't make me any less stupid for my logic above, though.

I believe you mean the "uplink" port. Basically it's just a crossover port. Some routers automatically determine if they need to be uplink ports while others have switches to turn them on or off. Some also have designated uplink ports.

My small Linksys desktop switch is either a 5 port or a 4 port + 1 uplink. The last port is actually shared between being a normal port and an uplink port. You can only use one of them at once obviously.

Yeah, I've got an 8 + 1 port hub where the 8th and +1th ports are the same port, but you use a different hole depending on whether you want uplink or not. You can't use both at once. My Netgear switches have a switch to change the direction of the 8th port.

The new Netgear switches don't even have an uplink switch - they do it automatically.

Yeah. Most stuff supports auto MDI-X now. Much less hassles with cable types now.
