I misread your mispelling of "point" as "oink", which was very confusing for a second

Hey, that is slick! I've needed something like that many times. I know sony came out with a little device that was supposed to do somethign similar. When you heard a song you liked, you'd hit a button on the little device and when you got home you could lookup online what song was played at that time - or something. I don't think it was a success.

Does this actually work? I have a hard time beleiveing it would, unless they restricted it to radio stations where they knew the playlists and just had to figure out which radio station you were listening to. Or it's all just an elaborate hoax.

I tried it four times right after it launched earlier in the year and it failed every time. If it fails you get a credit to try again but they only managed to figure out the credit system recently so I have only just been told that I now have them in my account to use.

I have heard several people on TV/radio rave about how good it is so it must work.

I believe the software was developed by Philips and stores a hash of the music and compares a hash of your clip to their store.

edit: No it wasn't developed by Phlips - are/were doing something similar. Here's an article from Aug '02 when it was launched:

I tried it quite a bit when it first came out, and it got pretty much every song I tried, even correctly identifying different versions of the same song. We tried it on CDs as well, so it is checking the song not the playlists.

It was about 40 or 50p a go though so I had to stop!

Haven't tried it since!
