The radio stations in my town (Minneapolis) are finally starting to use RDS in a useful way. Two of the stations are showing the song playing. However, it is only showing it in the upper left hand corner and it is about a 1/2 an inch wide. This makes it difficult to read. I wish it scrolled across the bottom. Is where the info is scrolling decided by the player or the radio station? Also, there is an RDS function on Hijack...what does that do? Also, does anyone know of a receiver that utilizes the RDS function (I don't think there is, but you never know.)

There is one local radio station where I live which uses RDS. When I tune to this station, the song name DOES scroll across the bottom of the screen. Assuming they get it right, that is. About 50 percent of the time it's wrong. On my player, and on this station, the upper left corner of the screen is for the station call letters.

First, sanity check: What version of the player software are you using? Mine works as described above using 2.0 final.

Anyway, there's a very good chance that the RDS problems you're seeing are the radio station's fault. U.S. radio stations are well known for poor RDS implementations. FAQ entry here.

the upper left corner of the screen is for the station call letters.

Some stations may abuse the RDS protocol and put song titles, ads etc into the station name/call letters field, sometimes updating the string sent in order to make things scroll...

Ah. There you go. The radio station's fault. They're putting the song name in the wrong field.

That's illegal in the UK, as it could distract drivers.

One of the first papers on RDS was released by our research department. I also think the bulk of the first RDS equipment was designed by the research/equipment guys.
But I think the idea of radio data was first dreamt up by the European Broadcasting Union. I know the BBCs implementation of EON is probably the first.

EON - Enhanced Other Network, basically allows local stations to interrupt for a TA (traffic Announcement) even though you're listening to a non-local station.
