My brother and his wife are having a baby in January, so I thought I would get them a subscription to something like a .mac where they can post photos. However, they don't have a Mac. Anyone have a suggestion for a nice online-photo-posting site + client software for uploading them?

I think The Screen Savers (TechTV) did a comparison review of the sites that did this recently. Check out their web site. The most well known of these services is "Shutterfly", but there are a few others.

In addition, Gallery can be set up to use Shutterfly. Visitors can order prints, and the person sharing the images can choose whether 1 or 2 cents get added to each print to support the Gallery project.

My parents use Shutterfly and like it (they are not computer savvy).

There is also Snapfish and Ofoto:

You of all people should know about Gallery Remote. (It's written in Java)...

Gallery is a piece of sofware that does the same thing as Ofoto, et al. But it also has a feature that allows viewers of the pictures to easily order prints from Shutterfly. It's not really client software itself.

Yeah, sorry for not mentioning that. Remote works pretty well, and they're improving it all the time.

Just offering it as a suggestion.

Is it true that shutterfly is free if everything is online only? I can't find any talk of disk space limitations ...

I am using the upload agent built into XP to send pics to my gallery. The XP Upload Agent kicks Gallery Remote's ass.

That's if you like XP

Besides, the last time I looked into it, I think the people at Gallery actually prefered the XP upload agent

For anyone who's interested, my brother and I did some quick hacks to gallery last week so that he can use different html_wrap and css files for every gallery. That way, he can theme each gallery, or keep it with the default theme.

You can see a sample of it in his Turkey gallery.

I could probably package up the changes if anyone's interested.

Oooo... that's really nice. I like the idea of putting a banner type thing at the top of each gallery. I'd love that. You should submit the patch to the gallery folk!

I'd like to make it a little more automated. Right now, whenever you want to create a themed gallery, you have to create a new folder in the html_wrap and css folders that is the same as the gallery name. Then you have to copy the default files into it. I'd like to automate that on creating or renaming the gallery. When I get that done, I'll probably submit the patch.

Another PC solution that's perhaps closer to iPhoto is Picasa. It's the fancy all-in-one integrated client software solution. And, like Apple with their .Mac, Picasa has a web site (hello.com) where you can seamlessly publish your pictures.

(And, then you don't have to support your friends by running Gallery on your own machine and have them gripe at you when it doesn't work properly.)
