You're having hardware problems. If this is truly a MkI, then chances are you have a bad hard drive. Of course, it's probably easier and cheaper to check the cable and the header first. Read this FAQ for more info.

By the way, this seems to be in completely the wrong forum.

if the hard drive was bad would it still have songs on it and play them? it will eventuall boot up in the car and house after 2-3 mins but it wont synchronize in emplode. it stops at building databases .

If you had read the very first link I gave you, you would have seen that database trouble can be caused by hard disk trouble.

You have two problems.

Problem 1: Hard disk trouble, either because of a bad hard disk or connection trouble between the hard disk and the rest of the player.

Problem 2: A corrupted database file as a direct result of problem 1.

You must solve the problems, in order of Problem 1, then problem 2. You have been given links that describe how to solve the problems. Please avail yourself of them.

PS: Check your IDE cables carefully. Since you have a Mk1, you might be having the problem I had with my Mk1 which was that a jumper on the motherboard rubbed the cable and wore off the insulation, causing a short.

It's possible. It might be a transient, if common, error, or it might be that the drive finally gives up and the application ignores it or gets bad data that you don't notice, or it might be only a particualr section of the drive that's bad that isn't really noticeable while playing the music.

Regardless, there's not much point in arguing about it. The errors that you listed expressly indicate a hardware error. It's now a task of finding out what hardware is causing the problem. The three non-fatal suspects are the drive, the cable, and the header. I'd check those first. It's possible that the IDE controller is going bad, or that some traces have gone bad, or some other basically irreparable problem, but I'd say that those possibilities are quite unlikely.

Also, the Mk1's shock mounts are more prone to coming undone, so damage to the ide cable or drive itself is more likely on a Mk1 than a Mk2.

I'm going to punctuate that beacuse I'm not sure if what I'm reading is what you meant:
Let's say it's the hard drive. Is it the IBM Travelstar ones? I'm goin' to have my computer teacher bitch check it out tomorrow.
You want to know what to buy as a replacement? Any laptop hard drive should do as long as it fits in the case. The Drive Upgrade Guide has info on the exact dimensions.

Tony says that a frayed cable might be likely on a MkI. Take a look at that and see if you can see any worn places.

And if your computer teacher is nice enough to check hardware components for you, you might want to reconsider calling her a bitch.

The Drive Upgrade Guide lists the part number of the correct IDE cable of the Mk1.

The MK1 IDE cables are rarely bad, if ever.

Try redoing the boot sequence a few times (2-3), and see if the lbasec=xxxxx values ever change from those you posted here earlier. If not, then the hard drive REALLY DOES have bad sectors, which can only be fixed by overwriting them. Easiest thing to try to overwrite them is to simply do a reinstall of the empeg software -- the v2final .upgrade file. That will fix it if the bad sects are in any of the important files.

Cheers

I've seen bad cables and a bad IDE header in a MKl plus a bad serial port.

I'm confused, why is this in the Karma forum?

Edit: Tom moved it. It was true when I asked.
