Mmm... take it apart and check for frayed insulation on the displayboard ribbon cable (common problem, due to the drive tray rubbing against it).

Definitely the first thing to check.

Mmm.. I dunno. If it works fine for long periods of time *sometimes*, then the memory is probably just fine. Something else is wrong.

I don't have time to diagnose it in the near future -- kinda swamped with multiple contracts at the moment, the hourly rate for which would rapidly pay for several eBay Empegs -- so pin your hopes elsewhere for now. I can do quick solder replacements and the like, but diagnosing flakey hardware would take much much much longer.

It does sound like flakey memory at the moment. Unfortunately, I do not know of a better way to test for it. Either way, it will need to be looked at.
