Hi,

I just snapped the drive connector off of my IDE cable wile adding a 2nd drive to my Empeg. I searched the forum and found a thread referring to the fact that the cable is custom. Is this the case? I know Rob is unavailable, is there an alternative source? The cable seems fine - is there a way to snap a new connector on the cable?

Also - I am adding a 2nd Fujitsu 80 Gb drive, the first is also a Fujitsu, a 30 Gb drive. The original drive has no jumper. Do I need to add jumpers to both, making the first the "0" drve and the 2nd the "1" , or can I leave the jumpers off and let the cable select do the job?

Thanks

Joe

I think Eutronix now has empeg cables. Click the S/PDIF link at the top of the page.

Thanks Rob. We just added them to the site. They can be found under 'Products' and 'Order.'

We just added them to the site.
And I just added a link to the "no hard disk found" FAQ entry. Thanks!

I ordered and got my shipping confirmation from Eutronics today. Thank you all so much. Hopeing soon to have a 110 Gb Mark 2 to go with my 60 gb unit. Any idea how lomg a clone of my 60 onto the 110 will take? The 60 is about 70% full. Also, I didn't see it in the faq - what about the jumpers on the drives - does cable select work or will I have to make them master and slave? If it is the latter, which is the master and which the slave? I assume on the Fujitsu drive that making one drive 0 makes it the master, and drive 1 becomes the slave? Correct?

Copying the data will take a couple of hours - there's no DMA etc on the empeg. Last time I changed disks I started one before going to bed and it was done when I woke up, so I don't have any precise timings. I wouldn't sit around waiting, but go do something else while it works...

I don't know if CS works or not... isn't there supposed to be an interruption of one of the wires in the IDE cable (or contacts on the wire)? Doubt that such an interruption is there...
I've always used jumpers and had the drive closest to the IDE header as master (mainly because that's how they come configured from start), but I don't think the physical position matters.

The master drive will be drive0 (aka /dev/hda) while the slave will be drive1 (aka /dev/hdc - on a normal Linux system it'd be /dev/hdb, but it's fudged on the MkII's to keep compatitbility with the MkI's that used two master drives, each on its own IDE channel)

MTempsch - thanks man - a huge help. I'll let you know how I make out, I am psyched to get a second fully loaded unit, with some space to spare.

Jumper settings are covered in the Drive Upgrade Guide. One jumper is required on the slave drive in a two-disk configuration.

Cable select (CS) definitely will NOT work with the usual Empeg drive ribbon cable.

I do use it all the time in my larger machines, so long as the cables have the blue / grey / black connectors required for such.

Cheers
