Hmm... 224kbps MP3s... They forget to state the encoder and CBR/ABV/VBR though...

and:
RipDigital actively encourages responsible use of digital music by including unique and traceable information on each file that identifies the music as yours.
Wonder what they do if the CD is so scratched it can't be read properly...

This is actually a pretty damn good business idea... After a while, you have virtually all music stored, and it's basically a DVD-burning gig.

If you go through the buy process they have a disclaimer that if the CD is heavily scratched, it will not be ripped, but you must still pay for it.

assuming, of course, that they bought the music before keeping it locally

It sounds like a neat idea but I couldn't stand paying that much. I wonder what they do for tagging.

Hopefully they've got a big automated CD robot to do the disc swapping otherwise it'd be the most boring job ever. I'm also quite curious as to what they do about the tagging. If it's just straight out of FreeDB or Gracenote then there are always mistakes.

You're also taking quite a big risk as well. If this place does suddenly disappear then you've lost your entire CD collection!

Well... yeah. That would be the legal way. Guess I wasn't quite awake when I wrote that.

Very interesting.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the RIAA win a suit against the "My MP3.com" service and get it shut down specifically because making a copy of a CD for commercial purposes, even if it's for the CD's rightful owner, isn't protected by the AHRA?

As far as I understood it, the thing about the mp3.com case was that the security around the check for ownership wasn't good enough. They had encoded a bunch of CDs, and you could download it after saying you had bought it yourself.
Here, they take *your* CDs and turn into mp3s. No legal danger.

Actually, you may want to look at this and this for some *extremely* interesting reading.

Not quite true. MyMP3.com required you to put in the music disc into your drive and it scanned the same info used for CDDB queries. If it matched a CD they had, you were granted straming access to it. Nowhere did MyMP3 ever allow you to download the music. Of course stream rippers exist to counter that,
