Has anyone used the software called RioRad? I found it googling today and it seems interesting. I wonder if they could port this to the empeg?

RioRad

Don't have a Karma, but if this ever comes out for the empeg, I'll get it in a heartbeat.

< /. mode> But it doesn't support ogg! (according to the "Get Riorad!" page) </ /. mode>

Well it does have "AudioMorph" which will automatically change bitrates and formats during syncs. So it will take your nice ogg's that you want on your Karma, and make MP3's out of them. Sorry.. sounds lame. Other than this little thing it does sound cool though!

I just installed and tried it out on my karma. So far it’s horrible, it took over 5 minutes "Connecting" to the karma, while consuming 100% cpu, and around 30mb of ram. After it finally "Connected" in the riorad explorer I would get “karma has timed out while connecting” error message.
The web interface was also dirt slow, but my guess is it was generating static html files from the database the first hit.
I was hoping that their explorer might give me access to the root web directory on the karma, but its mainly just tree menus for each of the different soup views that are already included in rio music manager.

So far very unimpressed with this software

That's too bad. On first glance it looks like a great concept.

On a side note, I found this today while getting the shn/md5 codec for dbpoweramp.
I'm not exactly sure what it would be used for, and haven't bothered to download it yet. I think its just another 3rd replacement for Rio Music Manager.

DbPowerAmp Sveta Karma, Nitrus, Eigen, Cali, Chiba driver.

Yeah, it's a plugin for Sveta Portable Audio, which works with all the dbPowerAmp stuff to be a replacement for RMM. It lets you rip straight to Karma, or automatically transcode from flac to ogg (for example) during loading. Cool stuff.

The biggest problem right now is that it takes several minutes to initialize itself on a full Karma. It takes a few seconds to download the database, and the rest of the time is probably arranging the track list in memory. If he can fix that problem, I'd likely buy it.

The slow performance on players with lots of content (experienced by both Sveta and Riorad users) was our fault. We left some debugging in the SDK by mistake. I imagine updated versions of both products will be available soon.

Yeah, the new RioRad is out already. I expect that Sveta should soon follow. I'm glad I didn't give the guy too much of a hard time for the speed issue now that I know it's not his fault.

I notice that web site has a lot of legalese in it, including the 'all images are belong to us' bit. Does Rio care that their marketing images are being used under that pretext?

It was Marketing who asked us to support Red Chair so I'm sure they don't mind.

FWIW I use Notmad (the Creative Labs Nomad version of Riorad, and the first piece of MP3 software Red Chair released) and it is *excellent*.

It sounds like the bugs are fixed anyway, but if they aren't I'm sure Red Chair will be on it. Their Tech Support is also very good, and they are open to wishlist items.

In reply to:

But it doesn't support ogg!

In reply to:

It does now (as of 8.5.0). It supports Flac too. One thing that it won't do is AudioMorph things to ogg or flac. It will Morph things from ogg and flac, and it will load ogg and flac directly, but it won't yet do what I want, which is to take Flac from the computer and morph to ogg while loading on Karma. I emailed them, though, and they said that's on the todo list.

It doesn't need to support Ogg does it? As far as I know it just transfers files, and plays them either remotely or buffered on the PC.

Well, it does need to know to support ogg, if for no other reason than to make sure to load the files right. By default, it's set up so that recognized music files get put on the Karma as tunes, and any other files get just put on as Taxi files. So, at the very basic level, it needs to know that ogg files go in as music.

Beyond that, I'm sure there are different things to put in the database for a vorbis or flac file than the other music files, so it would need to know how to write the database parts correctly. Also, for the AudioMorph feature, if you want to transcode on the way in it would certainly need to know how to read and write the formats.

So, when it didn't specifically support vorbis or flac, you couldn't use it to get vorbis or flac files on to Karma.

As far as getting stuff off the Karma, yeah, it wouldn't need to really know anything since all it's doing is pulling off data and handing it to an external player.
