I've searched through the forum and the FAQ and cannot seem to find mention of my problem I am having. When I load up Hyperterminal in XP I get the following message: "Windows has reported a TAPI error (80000048). Use the Phone and Modem options icon in the control panel to ensure that a modem is installed properly." And when I try to go into the phone and modem settings in my control panel, I get this message: "Phone and modem options cannot be started. You may have a problem using telephony service." I can still get into Hyperterminal and set up a profile on either my COM1 or COM2 ports, but I can't seem to connect to the Rio. And using Jemplode to connect via serial isn't working either. Anyone have a suggestion for this situation?

You're the first person to ever report that error in relation to the empeg, it's the first time I've seen it. Clearly it's something wrong with either your hardware, your XP install, or your drivers. Have you searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base?

TAPI??? Do you have a dial-up modem in conflict with your serial port? Check that first.

I've looked somewhat through the Microsoft Knowledge Base, but nothing yet. My serial ports work perfectly fine as I've tested them with other devices. The cable is fine as well. It has to be software related somehow. Also, I don't have a modem installed and never have on this machine....

Some of the KB articles related to TAPI suggest that you need the latest XP service pack, although they don't specifically mention your error. Is your version of XP fully patched up?

Then they ought to work fine with the empeg. Try using TeraTerm.
