I have a older MK2 before I send it into Eutronix for Optical out, led kit, tuner and a few other bells, I was wondering if there are enough "Improvments" in the MK2A model to warrent selling my MK2 and Getting a MK2a maybe 50 bucks or so differance.

I think the MK2A has a bit more ram for larger files (and I am ripping all my Cd's to FLAC )

I think it also has the Cap fix for dimmer and a few other "upgrades"

I think (and I could be wrong) that the biggest difference is the RAM. Not important as regards to file size, but to database size. If you get too many tracks on there, it can become an issue.

Last count I had about 15000 files on my Empeg

I though there were also a few parts on the MK2 that were removed on the MK2a like the filter caps on the audio output that were cliping the frequency to 18Khz and one more I can't remember right now.

From another thread, the filter caps aren't removed on the 2a, they are replaced with a different value so they don't clip the high end.

In my opinion, the only reason to get a 2a is if you somehow really need that extra RAM. And you wouldn't need it unless you had some sort of special custom software you wrote yourself that had to use it.

Otherwise, there's nothing wrong with the Mk2 units. And the little differences can be easily altered if desired (such as removing those caps).

Don't forget caching. If you've got a lot of Flac on your player, you'll need all the caching you can get. You'll probably find that a Mark 2 is unable to spin its disks down at all when playing Flac. (Mind you, you might find that with a Mark 2a too; I haven't tried.)

I would rather an MK2 at times. Just because of the "Empeg" logo that is printed on the case. I really dislike the "Rio" name on my mk2a.

It’s not a riocar, it will always be the empeg.

And, the stainless steal case, and the different knob, and the de-burred edges, and the carrying case.... [homer]mmmmmmm.... mk2[/homer]

I took the top panel from my MK2 and use it on my MK2a. Still a Rio logo on the back near the RCA jacks, but I don't have to look at that as often.

The only advantage to the MkII (and I have both) is the geek factor. For $50, I would gladly pay to go from 12MB to 16MB, so I strongly urge you to get the Mk2a. You already have a load of tracks, and if you get more, the extra ram will come in handy... Paul G. and I are already running into issues w. our Mk2as because of limited RAM.

See, I don't have an mk2, only my buddy does. So maybe I’ll get tricky one night was my 2.5mm hex.

Or, I thought about sandblasting it before, or soaking the top is some sort of acidtone, but then I remembered that the top is also pretty much one of a kind, so I can't screw it up

In theory I have hundreds of silver empeg case stickers somewhere. I'll bring some to the meet.

Why not just hop over and pick some up in person, Paul?

You are now the highest profile person on the BBS to not make it across.. with Bitt, _yn0t and genixia not far behind..

A "Send the Grz to Amersfoort" fund drive??? Or maybe all he needs is a "Make the Grz's boss otherwise occupied while he sneaks off to Amersfoort" recon mission.......

Paul, I could bring one back for you if you want. Then I'd finally get to see the "big ol' Buick" (which they're installed in, right?)

Greetings!

I read in flat mode, so this is a general reply to all of the above (from my perspective). One of these days I will get there. It is not a matter of travel or tickets or anything. Just otherwise occupied with work and other related topics here.

Plus, as my profile says, I am an anti-social hermit. In real life, it takes a lot to get me out from behind a computer screen. To get me to travel will usually take a natural disaster of some catastrophic proportion. I didn't even make the New York meet (last year?), and that was only 40 minutes away...
