192 CBR is my minimum...anything less is easily noticable. 192 VBR (using LAME) or 256 VBR/CBR are recommended.

Depending on your hearing and listening environment, there's a chance you might be able to get away with 160.

He is talking about MP3Pro, not MP3. I'm gonna try to not talk out my ass, but a 128k MP3Pro should sound like a 256k MP3 but only when the decoding device supports MP3Pro. If it doesn't (like the empeg doesn't), it will sound like a 128k MP3.

I personally use 320k CBR MP3s using LAME (converted from FLAC files). I use Exact Audio Copy to extract to FLAC.

I usually rip at 212 using eac/ lame. and it sounds pretty good. If you go any lower there becomes a noticeable loss of extreme bass and highs.

You should really check out that FAQ link that cushman posted for you earlier - it'll pretty much answer any question you might have. Luckily Tony hasn't come by this thread yet.

Also, a search on this forum for "best ripper" brought up this old thread.

Actually, I have, just didn't respond. I wanted to say that "nobody supports MP3pro so what's the point", but I actually didn't have any facts to back that up. Anyone know if there's any serious devices out there that play mp3pro?

Greetings!

If you have the disk space to support it, rip everything to FLAC. That way, you can transcode without loss to whatever format / bitrate you find you like, without having to re-rip everything. Trust me: you may start at what sounds like a good bit rate now, but you may decide you want to adjust it later.

As far as hardware, I believe that the only players to support it were the RCA Lyra ones. (Note that RCA/Thompson developed mp3pro.) There are software players, but I don't think that's really what you were asking about.

Check here.

ok...I used EAC to rip some cd's and encoded them no problem...but somewhere during the whole process I changed the priority of the ripping to high and it started ripping wma files instead of wav's and now eac wont convert them to mp3's.what did I do wrong? how can I xencode them to mp3?
