Hello,

Could anyone tell me how to get albums on the empeg to sort by TRACKNR using jemplode 54?

Thanks,
woops

(I'm telling you this by memory, so sorry for the lack of total specifics.) Make sure that the track number column is visible in jEmplode. Click on the column header to sort by that column. Then click the A<->Z toolbar button. This will set the playlist's order in the current view order. You'll have to do this for each playlist, unfortunately.

I remember how annoying that was. But luckily, I didn't have much music on my empeg when I discovered that. Now, I rip my CDs into folders like this:

MP3

|-Dream Theater
| |-2003 - Train of Thought
| |-01 - As I Am.mp3
| |-02 - This Dying Soul.mp3
| |-03 - Endless Sacrifice.mp3
| |-...
|-Symphony X
| |-2002 - The Odyssey
| |-01 - Inferno (Unleash the Fire).mp3
| |-02 - Wicked.mp3
| |-03 - Incantations Of The Apprentice.mp3
| |-...

Having the track numbers at the beginning of the filename means that the order doesn't get screwed up. I went back to plain ol' emplode and just drag and drop now. I do realize some people don't have that luxury, though.

I think the ability to change the way jEmplode sorts on import would be a good feature. Maybe I'll go add that to the new jEmplode feature thread.

Actually there is another (better?) way. Go into the jemplode options and set "Tag name to sort on" to "tracknr" and check auto sort on import. Also make sure you have dedup on import checked as well. Now reimport all your tunes. They will all be dupes so you wont have to upload again, but jemplode will update the sort order anyway. Do a sync and you should have everything sorted by track number.

I remember trying this many times and it just did not work. Nothing got resorted - I even had a thread on it here.

I rip mine the same way and have always been including the track numbers at the begining of the filename in %02 format so they would always sort fine in the OS. But on the empeg and in Jemplode, they would go back to alphabetical. Jemplode doesn't seem to care about the filenames, it cares about the song name in the id3 tag. The most certain way to get to get it right is to modify the song name in the id3 tag to begin with the track number. Kind of like the filename.

Hang on. I think you're confusing alphabetical screen order with playback position order. The empeg screen will list things alphabetically. The Emplode/Jemplode screens will list things in the order of whichever column you've clicked on. The important thing is what order they play back in, and that's controlled by the position column, which is controlled by the file name on playlist import like you say it doesn't do.

Please click here for a detailed description of how to control these factors.

I wasn't. Because I didn't know about them. But now, I think I shall have to pick up a ticket for the Boston show. So far, April is shaping up to be a good month for me. And thanks.

Strange, it works fine for me. I just used that method to sort around 30 gigs of music on one of my empegs a couple weeks ago. Worked like a charm.

Interesting: I ripped all my CDs using the RioCentral. They play in the correct order there. However, not only does jEmplode v54 list the tracks alphabetically when looking in the playlists, but the POSITION column is numbered in the order of alphabetically. That is, it seems that the order that the RioCentral plays isn't being properly communicated to jEmplode.

Anyone else see this?

I'm not sure what you're saying. Are you saying that the position column is not in order? Just click on the column header and it will be in order.

I'm sayin:

1) Rip the "Song about Stuff" album on Rio Central. Album consists of:
Song about Trees
Song about Bread
Song about Capsules

2) Play Album on Rio Central: songs play in correct order.

3) Connect to jEmplode v54. Excerpt from the Album/Songs about Stuff playlist:
Title Position
Song about Bread 1
Song about Capsules 2
Song about Trees 3

Very very strange.

Hang on. When you rip an album on the Central, it doesn't make a playlist. Playlists are something you have to create yourself. "Position" has no meaning in a soup entry on the central itself, it only has meaning for playlists. How did you create the playlist?

Maybe it's should be a feature request where jemplode should use the track number as the basis for the postition when displaying stuff like albums and artists. Dunno how it handles that.

No, I didn't create a playlist.

I was using the term "playlist" to talk about the entry in the Album soup view. I was assuming a soup entry was essentially a playlist from jEmplode's point of view.

Sorry for the confusion.

So, jEmplode doesn't currently use the RioCentral's inside-an-Album play order when creating the position column in the soup view?

Clearly, the data is on the Central, otherwise it would always play out of order...might be something for me to add to the jemplode wishlist thread...

Change " [ Tools | Options | Tag Name to Auto Sort on: ] "
from its default of "title" to "tracknr" BEFORE you import any new songs.

I'm not an expert on jEmplode or anything, but it seems that tracknr would be a better default option. (I guess if the songs aren't tagged properly then title would would be what you want, but not having the files tagged makes it so much more of a pain.)

It would be nice if the option could be "tracknr then filename" so that it would use the track number first and the file name if no track number exists.

Is tracknr different than position? If not, I don't think it'd matter, since the list from the RioCentral that shows up in JEmplode always has the position order match the alphabetical order, even though the RioCentral itself plays them in correct order.

I'll play with it tomorrow a bit to see if I can figure out if they're different, etc.

Is tracknr different than position?
Yes. Very very different.

Tracknr is the specific track number tag. If you emploded the file onto the central, then tracknr is whatever was in the ID3 tag's "track number" field. If you ripped the file on the central, then tracknr is whatever sequence position that track had on the CD it was ripped from.

Position is the track's ordered-playback position within its parent playlist, or a playlist's ordered-playback position within its parent playlist. This controls the order that things are played when you play a playlist with shuffle turned off. Note that it is only relevant to specific user-created playlists and has no meaning in a soup view.
