Has anyone got an old X Box that they don't use any more? I'm not too fussed about wear and tear on controllers as I won't be using them.

Anyone????

I've got one pre-modded one with 120Gb HD (still have orig too) and mod-chip that I very rarely use. I once had visions of X-Box Media Player glory, but I could never be bothered with it.

Edit - It's an Xecuter 2.2 Pro mod-chip if that makes a difference

How much were you looking to pay???

Cheers

Cris.

To be honest I'm not sure what the second hand value is. I've seen units on ebay for ~80 quid. I want to run GentooX on it so assume I'll need to mod it. The HD is a little on the big side for what I want to use it for so I'd quite happily use the original one.

Yea, you still need a mod-chip unless you want to do a game-save hack everytime you want to boot into Linux.

I fitted the Mod-Chip my self so it may need re-doing, although it does work, but I never invisaged moving the unit about so the joints may come loose in time.

I have 1 controller, DVD Remote and all the X-Box Live stuff too. No games, well except for the ones on the 120Gb The original HD is only 10Gb, but I would advise that you don't use that unless you'll never be bothered about using X-Box Live, when I want to use that I take out the 120Gb and turn off the mod-chip, if you don't Micro$oft figure out you've hacked it and block your XB-Live access.

Lets see if you get any more offeres first, I don't mind keeping hold of it, if you know what I mean.

I'll only be running linux on it so I don't give a stuff what Micro$oft think.. It'll have to wait until after pay day, which isn't for 2 weeks.

Yea, you still need a mod-chip unless you want to do a game-save hack everytime you want to boot into Linux.

You only have to do the hack once. Then it installs a new dashboard with a Linux option in place of the XBox Live option. From there, you can start installing Gentoo or some other such distribution.

But overall, a hardware mod is easier to deal with in the long run assuming it is just being bought as a cheep PC and not a gaming console.

Yeah, the XBox-Linux project seems to be coming on in leaps and bounds at the moment.

Having money on the line to develop these hacks helped quite a bit. So far they do all require the initial game save hack, but then people found hackable components of the dashboard, via an exploit in the font code.

The Emergancy linux option of the newer exploits comes in handy when you don't want to change the xbox, but just get all your save games off the unit. Why MS decided to allow hidden files for games is beyond me.
