Yeah, I like that page. Right after the announcement of the "3.96 final", there is the comment

"Notes: - There is a bug in LAME MP3 Encoder 3.96 Final version that can cause skipping. We recommend you to download LAME MP3 Encoder 3.96 b2."

Well, so much for the "final" part I guess. I think I will stick with the 3.90.3 branch, which has been proven to be just about the best you can do with mp3s.

Yeah, I've noticed that too, AFTER I downloaded it. It's not like they are using a big fat font to state that.

Oh well, at least they are honest about it...

If I understand it correctly, the so-called bug is only a potential problem if using CBR. If using --alt -preset standard it should give comparable results to 3.90 --alt -preset standard except that it's faster and yields smaller files. I've tried 3.96 with 5 cds and I'm getting files that are about 10%smaller than before

isn't --alt-preset now just --preset as of a couple of versions ago? now when I have to encode stuff at the prompt I just do:

lame --preset standard blah.mp3

--Ajay
