Well, I just had my local stereo specialist do an install, and he called me halfway through the day, and reported that the unit doesn't work! I was playing it at home yesterday!!! Well I drove down and took the unit back with me, and it seems for the most part dead. The unit powers up, and the hard drive spins up, but nothing appears on the display...only the flashing LED.

Anyone have any suggestions?? This is one of the first MK1's, so I imagine the warranty is expired (not only that, but over the past year, the sticker has all but worn off from taking the unit in and out of the cage) so bringing it in to Empeg for service is out of the question.

Thanks for the link. I don't think this is the problem though, as I have never tried to remove the drive bays or anything like that...

Were there some awkward boot-messages on serial console ?

Sounds like a known problem with Mk.1 players, which requires the fitting of a transient supressor in some cases. At the same time we replace the fuse that has blown resulting in your dead display.

Email [email protected] to arrange for repair. The warranty has been extended to cover this particular problem.

Thanks, rob... One other thing... is there something that I did that could have caused that? I still treat the unit like a baby and never jostle it or anything. This is the second time this has happened, so i figure maybe I have done something to cause it.

I haven't used my Mk. 1 for a long time. Since I have a Mk. 2 now and no I'm not selling it so don't ask. What I'm wondering is if I pull it out in a couple months/years/etc. will it fail eventually or if I've used it for 12months straight without trouble then it should be good forever? Now that you have had Mk. 1s out in the wild for a year do you have a good idea of what the expected life expectancy is? I'm not trying to start fear here just interested.

It is caused by large spikes from the alternator or starter motor - the supressor prevents this from happening again (although we didn't know to fit the supressor when this first started happening, so some people have had the fuse blow more than once).

If its run OK for that long I'd be surprised if it then failed. We had a spate of these at the beginning of the year when players were first getting installed into cars, but now we get maybe one a month, at most.

It's not a desperate failure anyway - just a fuse.
