Anyone Connecting using Linksys router?

Ok, for a few years now I have been connecting my player via second Ethernet card on my PC. Well now I need the last PCI slot so I have to start connecting thru my Linksys BEFSR41. Trouble is I can't connect. Can any of you Linksys owners explain to me how you configured your player and router so they see each other. Right now I a m running DHCP for my other connections on the router including my incoming cable internet connection. I don't know if all the Margaritas that I drank over the long weekend are still affecting me, but I sure feel like an idiot right now. Any help would be appreciated.

As I remember, DaveDave, you have to connect to the empeg via a non-Ethernet connection in order to change the Ethernet configuration, which is a little annoying. So break out an appropriate serial cable or a USB cable.

Yeah, I ran into that when I first went to start using Ethernet a few years ago. I am aware of this, but thanks for the heads up. I made all my changes in my player settings via USB.

So you're saying you've got the ethernet config on the empeg set up right and it's still not working? Once the player boots up, got to the About menu and see if it got a DHCP address properly.

I have also previously documented the buggy ethernet of the RioCar. It works just fine when connected to a 10mb/s hub, but seems to fail regularly with many 10/100 hubs and switches. I now hardcode IP parameters for all of my empegs, but still note that the empeg is unable to communicate to the outside until at least two packets have been sent to it.
Probably just a buggy driver in the kernel -- maybe we should try pulling in a newer version of the ethernet code in hopes that the bug is fixed? Not likely I suppose.
Cheers

Definitely go through these steps and see if anything there takes care of the problem.

I have my empeg plugged into the back of my Linksys Wireless Router. I just set it to a static IP and works great. I just set it to an ip that is just passed the DHCP range in the routers config.

Not to sound like a total moron, but can you please explain how you set this up? What Ip address did you use as well as gateway? Also wher do you enter this info?

This is directly out of my empegs config.ini:
Gateway=192.168.1.1
Netmask=255.255.255.0
IPAddress=192.168.1.152
My router does dhcp from 100-150 .

1.So set my Empeg to those settings.
2. Then do I set the options on select player menu in Emplode to Network Broadcast or Specific Address.
3. Should the Router automatically detect from here or do I have to change any settings?
Again thanks for any help.

i just set jEmplode to specific address and go. You shouldnt need to do anything on the router other then check and make sure the IP you use isnt in the DHCP pool. As long as your regular PC works thru the router so should the empeg.

I have always connected my Rio Car (Mark 2) to one of these routers with no hint of a problem. I've always had the Rio set up to obtain the IP address from DHCP which it's always sucessfully achieved. I of course have Hijack installed and I have the Home/Work bit in there too
I bought the router in the days before it supported IPSEC and since I needed that for VPN I did apply a firmware upgrade from the Linksys web site.
Not much help I'm afraid - but I've honestly never had a problem

Same here. At one time or another I've connected to my empegs using a BEFSR41, WRT54G, and WRT54GS. No problems at all. I think ninti's thread hints at an actual hardware issue, so maybe it was just a defective hub. I've personally been very thrilled with all of my Linksys products, which probably explains why I've got 3 of em spread around my apartment now.

Yes, when I had my original Empeg (Mark 2), it worked fine.
But my current three RioCar (Mark 2a) units all have trouble with the various 10/100 hubs and switches I have around here (currently two generations of Linksys, and one from Surecom). But no issues at all with a plain 10mb/s hub.

I've used a mk2a with a WRT54G in the past, and it worked fine. I'm currently using a Netgear FS108, and that works fine, too.

Something to keep in mind... These companies have been known to change the internal bits of their network products without changing the model number on the outside of the box. Whether through firmware changes, minor revisions in hardware or chips, or even completely different versions of chips. And a tiny thing like a timing problem when doing 10/100 negotiation could cause the ethernet connection to fail with certain devices...

Hehe, they have even been known to change everything including the case and the entire way it looks without changing the model number, especially Linksys. Case in point:
and
Both of which are the "Linksys EFAH08W 8-Port 10/100 Auto-Sensing Hub". Who knows how much is different inside. I just wanted him to be aware that in at least one case that I know about, an otherwise perfectly working Linksys hub refuses to work with the Empeg.

Hehe, they have even been known to change everything including the case and the entire way it looks without changing the model number, especially Linksys. Yeah, and it's so counterproductive. I've got a BEFW11S4, and it's obviously designed to stack with other devices the same size. And now I want to buy an 8-port switch. But I can't even work out without buying one, whether the Linksys one stacks nicely... if not, I might as well buy the UKP13 Dabs Value one and forget the UKP30 Linksys. I can't even tell from their web site -- all the switches, despite looking as if they stack together, are different sizes, the BEFW11S4 is a different size again, but then it's not the same BEFW11S4 as I've got, as it's got far fewer LEDs on the front. Muppets.
