Wow, the article made Slashdot. That's pretty sweet.

Yeah, someone has just accused Hugo of being full of [censored]. Anyone with mod points care to mod a rebuttal up?

Was someone Monty (xiph in xiph.org, the Ogg people)? I don't know the truth of it, but if Monty says a gen1 ipod can do ogg, it's almost certainly because he's done it.

I reckon it's just reverse psychology and Hugo's just trying to rile the Ipod people into putting Vorbis in their next firmware update.

The other thing is that playing "sensible bitrate" vorbis (64-160kbits/s) is much, much less intensive on both CPU and memory than higher bitrates -- audiophile nutters can and do thump the Vorbis encoder until it generates 400kbits/s or even 500kbits/s files. If the Ipod Linux people are decoding 128kbits/s Vorbis at 80% real-time, 1CPU then they aren't on course to decode 256 or 320 in real-time on both CPUs. Likewise, I haven't looked at Tremor-lowmemory, but I'd be very impressed if it could decode 500kbits/s Vorbis inside the 96kbytes of internal SRAM.

the Ipod Linux people

Which brings us to the obvious question, when are we going to see linux on the karma? I'd definitely get one then.

It wasn't Hugo all along (rips off mask) - it was the fairground owner Dastardly Slaphapple! And he would have succeeded as well if it wasn't for that pesky Jobs!

Somebody please explain that to me.

(Not the Scooby Doo reference. That I got. I mean the part where the article seemed to have the name actually change. My fragile sleep-deprived brain can't figure it out.)
