Usually, she hates all my audio or video toys... but in this case, I showed her how she can play any and every CD we own by just pushing the right remote buttons and that we can do the same thing in our home too from the docking station...

Now, it has become apparent to me that I need another remote for her use in the car.

What remote is easiest to use in the car for what most folks want to do with the RioCar?

Thanks.

Obviously the Rio Car specific one - after that it's probably the Kenwood RC6A (used for the MkI -- doesn't support all the functions [long presses] that the Rio remote does though) or other Kenwood remotes. But most any remote that uses the right frequency (38-40kHz IIRC) can be pressed into service by the ir_translate feature in HiJack.

For in-car use I usually use this remote. The type is called RC-600 and it's by Kenwood. Though is doesn't have all of the funtions of the RioCar remote, it does have 95% of them. All the stuff you do 99% of the time with the remote you can do with this one (like selecting playlists, search for tracks, etc.)

For a second, there, I thought you had needed another empeg! I have seen a lot of players "stolen" under just these circumstances.

The Kenwood remotes mentioned above are good. They do not have the long button presses, but will work nicely for everything else. You can also watch the "For Sale" forum - remotes will occasionally be seen for sale there. If you have (or want to talk someone else into allowing you to set up) a computerized AV controller computer, you can always control the empeg via serial or ethernet. There are also applications that you can run on the iPaq or Palm (I think!) that will act as a remote as well.

Note: I might have an extra Kenwood remote lying around here. Do not buy one yet. Let me look around...

You also might want to check out Empire/Palantir also. It queues up ad-hoc playlists easier than using the remote or front buttons using a Palm device. Any Palm device with an IR port will work, and you can pick up one for under $100, or under $50 on eBay. Most people I show my Empeg to can use it without much coaching, unlike the remote or front panel.

I'll second the Palantir plug. It's dead simple to use & is a bit simpler than 'spelling' things out on the remote.

Thanks everyone for your advice on the remote question. Here is a bad pic of the RioCar in my rack in the new docking station. I bought this on Ebay for $60 and fixed it up abit and sanded it between many coats of black gloss enamel. The finish almost looks a bit like the one used on the Pioneer Elite (Urushi) units. The docking station has a car sled in it so the RioCar slides in and out very easily. When the unit is in the docking station, is is also connected to my newwork via ethernet cable, so I can always add music to it from my office while the unit sits in my music/HT room.

This week, it will actually get installed in the car.

Dang we love this unit!!! :The longer we have it, the better it gets.

Very cool docking station! Nice work!

You will find that you will never want to go back to CDs again. There should be a warning or disclaimer somewhere...

Thanks! The pic doesn't look as good as the real thing. I can't believe that in the pic I can see fingerprints not visible to the naked eye. Also, the "cracked LCD" is actually just a reflection of one of the silver Tripod legs used to photograph the RioCar.

Paul,
You aren't kidding when you say that. My next project is figuring out how to add a tubed output stage to the docking station.
