I broke my handle for my MKIIa and need a replacement one. I have the stock face but if i can get a handle thats a little more heavy duty that would be great as long as it works with the stock face. But will settle for a stock one if i can get it. I just miss having one I can use. Thanks!

Also make sure to solve the problem that caused your handle to break in the first place.

Yeah I did, I ordered the replacement connector from DigiKey so I could get the screws, I was missing one. It comes in and out of the sled great now. Just wish I got em a day or two before it got stuck in there and I broke it.

I've got the original stock, but it will be a little whiel before I get the chance to get back at them. Keep an eye on Announcements to spot when I'm back in business.

Depending on where the break in your handle is located, you may be able to effect a temporary (albeit ugly) repair.

If the handle is broken like:

#.................................#
#.................................#
#.................................#
#.................................#
####./.###########

you could slide a piece of metal tubing over the break, perhaps beat on it a bit to mold it into a closer fit and add a bit of epoxy to the mix to hold it in place.

The handle wouldn't fold flat against the face of the player any more, but until you get a replacement handle it would do the job.

Unfortunitly the handle broke like this:

#.................................#
#.................................#
#.................................#
#.................................#
################./.#

So I tried some epoxy but it didnt hold I may not have put enuff of both liquids in. So I used a good old strip of Duct tape. It is VERY ugly and I just grab it by the upper right hand side and wiggle the empeg and it slides nicely out of the sled since I got both screws in it now.

Hmmm.. if you trimmed a bit from both sides of the break, you might be able to slide a piece of tubing that had a right angle bend in it over the broken section.

Wow, epoxy didn't do it? Could you just wrap the epoxy around both the handle and the arm, kind of making a cast to hold it in place?

Haha, I thought epoxy worked with everything! Or at least I'm hoping it does.

Well the epoxy I used was the type that had two tubes in one syringe(sp) type deal you press the stopper down and get both liquids. I tried to watch and make sure I got enuff of both but it just didnt get hard enuff. I had a huge c clamp on it all night. I wonder if some JB weld would work

That would have to be some very small tubing. If i get some time Ill stop by home depot and se if i can find anything that would work.

Well the epoxy I used

It is unlikely that any method of repair using just glue (or epoxy or cyanoacrylic adhesive etc.) will work.

The surface area to be glued just isn't large enough to handle the stresses involved in pulling on the handle. You have to think in terms of reinforcing the damaged area, and using the glue to keep the reinforcement in place.

There is probably less than 10 square millimeters of bonding area there, or about .02 square inches. If all you did was carry the player by its handle, you'd be loading that repaired area with about 200 pounds per square inch. Pulling it from the sled could increase that by an order of magnitude if your sled was tight-fitting or you were missing a connector screw. You have to spread that load over a larger area!

Perhaps tightly wrapping fine wire across the broken area (including maybe half an inch on each side) and then liberally coating that area with epoxy would work -- wire for the strength, epoxy to keep everything in place.

I wonder if it could be drilled and pinned somehow. Getting the pin aligned would be difficult though.

I'd tape it together with scotch tape then slot the back with a dremel tool large enough to fit a piece of hardened steel (hex wrench cut to size will work), insert the steel, and glue with jbweld. It should allow removal but iI wouldn't carry it by the handle anymore.

hehe, I may be good at ghetto riggin stuff but Iam not able to do all these repairs you all are offering . I am not using the handle to carry it, I will wait til I have my replacement for that. I currently just pull the player out by the part of the handle closest to the player as to not put force on the bad spot. duct tape may just work til I get a replacement. I just wanted something to hold the two pieces together. Tho if I am able to find a tube that would work I would try that. just havent had any luck yet.

Oh BUT Thank you for your advice. I will keep them in mind. IF I grow brave enuff to try things I may give a couple of them a shot. I am just to scared of hurting my lil empeg more.

I was gonna say pin it, as a matter of fact I'm sure I did and it was squashed in the power failure.

Anyway if the break is near one end you should clamp the ends together and drill thru the end and insert pin. Like this

####
####
####
####
########B#######
####PPPPPPPPPPPP
########B#######

B=BREAK P=HOLE/PIN

A pin diameter of .032" inserted at least .125 past the break should work.

Might be a good reason to pull out my dremel and the drill press stand i got for it.. Would a very small nail work for the pin? Is the Handle made of a material that JB weld would work? So I could throw some in with the nail and between the break. Im just worried I may make it worse but then again its already broke so whats the worse that could happen to it?

That's the right attitude!

When I said pin, it was in the generic sense of the word. I would expect a cut down nail to work.

My personal choice would be to use piano wire. It has higher tensile strength. (Available at all hobby shops.) The outside of the wire will need to be scuffed for the epoxy to grip. Many random gashes, not too deep, with a cutoff tool would work too.

I said 1/8" past the break. Deeper would help with keeping the pin from pulling out.

Also you didn't mention much about the break itself. Was it a clean break or did the handle get bent? I ask because you may need to dress the ends a little to allow the hinges to line up, and get the side to side spacing right.

The handle it self was slightly bent but it seems to mainly be because the to ends are no longer connected. the break it self was fairly clean. Even if I did manage to pin it back together I doubt I will use the handle to carry it. Just to carefully pull it out of the sled like I do now.

Ok, Here's some thinking outside the box. Cut the bar off of both ends of the handle. And install some knobs on the bottom front of the stubbs.

So far I count three approaches:
Redneck (knobs)
Nerd (tape on glasses)
Dental (root canal)
