Obviously there's a way since the default player does it... I took a peek in the kernel before but didn't see it then. I'll have to look closer, or perhaps someone can clue me in.

What were you thinking for it? Have it go off after like a minute of no keypress activity or something?

I thought that the display was supposed to go dark after a few minutes....However both my players are lit constantly until whatever playlist is playing finishes...this mean that sometimes the displays are lit for five hours or more....I can't find any referrance in the guides that mention display timeouts.

I would love to be able to make them go dark after a much shorter period, much like a screen saver...say after 2 mins of no remote/button activity?

I think I read on here somewhere from one of the empeg guys that the backlight doesn't go off if the player is playing. It only goes off after a timeout when it's idle.

I figured as much even though I couldn't find it anywhere in the documentation...I do remember reading threads on it however but I don't remember the details. I don't mind the backlight being on all the time as long as it isn't going to crap out someday from overuse

I would like it to go off, as it is in our bedroom and the backlit is annoying when the light in the room is off at night.

The backlight does have a finite life (well, it'll just get dimmer - if you can imagine such a thing...). Hacking the kernel is a good way to kill the backlight if you don't want it on all the time when playing in the standard software. ISTR the half-life (ie, until half brightness) was in the thousands of hours.

Should be very simple to make it stay on for (say) 10 seconds after every key/IR press.

Could you point out what one would be looking for in the kernel to control the backlight of the LCD?

It's been a long time (and the source isn't near me at the moment) but I suspect in arch/arm/special there will be a comment somewhere about backlights.

grep -i is your friend.
