After weeks of experimenting, I finally got my receiver wireless for
under $60. You must be able to bind multiple IP's to one nic on your
audio server for this to work (i.e. XP or NT/Win2K - at least as far
as I can tell - most of my time was spent trying to eliminate this
problem so Win9x users could do this - if you can get around this,
let me know).
You can download the attached file (wireless.zip) for screenshots if you need them.
I connected a Proxim Symphony HRF router/gateway ($40 @justdeals.com)
to my receiver (use port 2 on the router) & a HRF USB adapter (these
were $20 but justdeals doesn't have any more - maybe you can pick
them up on eBay) to my Win2K audio server. In the router setup I had
to tell the Proxim router to act as both a bridge & a router (fig1)
to be able to enter IP's for both the "outside" (receiver) (fig2)
and "inside" (server) (fig3) network segments.
Next, hardcode the two IP's for the USB adapter (fig4 - under
the "Advanced" button on your network connection TCP/IP properties).
I'm using the standard audio receiver manager with the beta rioplay
client (BTW, I used a terrific free windoze tool called BinEdit to
edit the arf to include my own shoutcast server IP), so fig5 shows
how to configure the IP settings on the server. You'll see
1 "adapter" per IP, so the USB wireless shows up twice - disable
everything except the receiver-side adapter (it'll have the highest
last address) & set the IP's as shown.
Finally, you'll need a route from the server thru the USB adapter to
the receiver (fig6).
The HRF adapters only run at 1Mbps, but I've tried both shoutcast &
regular MP3's w/smooth performance.
I bought a ton of extra HRF gateways & both USB & PCMCIA nics from
justdeals while they were cheap, so if anyone wants to trade some of my HRF gear for your receiver just let me know. ;-)
Cheers!
