Folks,

Version 0.1.2 of tRio is now available on SourceForge. See http://triot.sourceforge.net for details of that's changed and, of course, to download. (It's actually been there for a few days now, but any of you who jumped in there early might want to grab a fresh copy.)

It's essentially a maintenance release, but one or two new features have been added.

Please note that I will be on holiday next week and so support will be hard to come by for that time. So you'd do well to give it a go before then.

Cheers
Paul

Paul,

The new version seems to be working quite well for me. So much so in fact that I purchased my third Rio Receiver and a set of powered speakers for another room. Very cool to be able to listen to all of the same streaming music in sync with each other. While this may not be the right place to post this, a few items I'd love to see make it to the wish list.

1. Access to the internal playlists - With 9,000 songs online in my system, I've had to resort to playlists to make the music I want to listen to most often easier to find.

2. Ability to move forwards and backwards in the queued files from any receiver if you're listening to a remove receiver (while synced)

3. Better error recovery in the net-radio streaming. If the stream cuts out there's a java display that doesn't allow you to start the stream again without starting a different stream first.

4. Able to control the receiver from a Web browser (quite a wish item I know). It would be nice to be able to view what's being played and the ability to control the functionality of the receivers by logging into the java-based server. There are a few incarnations of this in other 3rd-party players that make them quite useful since you can't see the display from across the room. (I admit, I'm wireless... And access my servers remotely)

All in all, I can't say enough about this implementation of a third-party player/server. It's really brought new life back into my receivers.

Thanks again!
Dave

Dave,

Hey, it's great to hear it's doing the business for you. Now that I'm back at the grindstone (and relatively uninjured!) I'm about to start planning 0.1.3. And so your post was well timed.

I reckon we can go quite some way towards satisfying your wish list - playlist support will definately be a priority.

On the sync'd playback control from "slave players" point, I disallowed this because I was worried that it might lead to domestic unrest (Pa in the lounge suffering emotional stress as his early evening classical respite is hi-jacked by his teen-age son's chosen form of self expression).

But it really is a pain to have to wonder into the other room to change what's playing. Maybe what's required is the ability to make a player "private" (no one can listen in), "master" (others can listen in but not control) or "open" (others can listen and control).

Paul,

I'm glad that you're back in play and away from those pesky vacations!

I suppose I was being a little selfish in my want of controlling the players. It's just me wandering around the house with nobody to pick fights with over what's going to be listened to! I didn't really think about somebody ELSE! LOL

I did want to add in the ability to randomize the playback list for both regular queues as well as playlists.

As mentioned before, I'm quite enjoying your new player and will gladly help out in any way that I can.

Thanks again for all of your hard work. It's much appreciated!

-Dave

How about having it so that if a change is made that the UI asks if you want to make this change on just the current receiver or on all of them?

i would really love a browser interface. specifically, something i could use to automate turning the devices on or off, setting up playlists, etc. using wget

it would also be cool to be able to push messages to the lcd display, such as weather, temperature or even caller id info.

Bitt,

If you chose to make the change on just the current receiver (and not the others), this would break the synchronisation. Are you suggesting that the receiver should be given it's own copy of the play queue and then "cut loose"?

Yup, a web interface is definately up there in the list of priorities.

Regarding the messages, I guess the sky's the limit with what can be done - it just needs to be coded up in java. I've been toying with the idea of setting up a WAP-style web browser application in tRio. While it would be severely limited by the screen resolution, it would give you access to a huge amount of stuff.

I mean that if Grampa's listening to Brahms synchronized and little Jonny wants to listen to his Limp System of a Clown Posse (or whatever), that he be given the opportunity to break sync and just listen to that on the player he's touching and leave all the other players in sync with Grampa's Brahms, and not give him a heart attack.

I would love to have a randomize option too!

Bitt, I'm not sure I'm following you ...

Currently little Jonny could just break sync (by pressing STOP) and then queue up his Limp System on his player. Unless Jonny's was the master player, in which case everyone would suffer.

What I will be having a go at is "auto syncing" internet radio playback so that all players tuned into the same station will be sync'd automatically.

Cheers

I guess the point is that if you allow any player to control the sync'ed source, which I think is a good idea, you need a way to make sure that someone doesn't accidentally change them all when they mean only to change one.

John,

I'll start up a new thread to deal with this.
