We're up to 4, anyone else need an MK1 car mount? Perhaps if a dozen people wanted one they'd make a batch up. I haven't seen a posting saying they are NLA.

I know that empeg said that they had a few around. One thing to consider - with all of the second hand Mk1s floating around from people upgrading, it might be a good idea to have a small run of the mounts made. I am certain that this is just the beginning for these requests.

Well, a couple months have passed. I'd be happy just getting the connector from a sled now. Did the rest of you give up on ever getting an additional MK1 sled?

That might be a lot easier. The Mark1 docking connectors are Farnell part numbers RP16 and RS16 (I don't know which half is which).

The RP16 is the sled connector, I've got a call into Newarks local office looking for availability.
Mounting the plug on an MK2 sled seems like the cheapest route (if the players are the same dimensions).
I emailed sales@empeg a few days ago asking about sleds (MK1 and MK2) and haven't heard back yet.

Interesting. I'd never thought of that.

You'd have to be pretty careful, though. The plugs on the two sleds are in completely different locations-- it's not as simple as just unscrewing one plug and screwing in another. You'd have to do some pretty serious drilling to the Mk2 sled to get the job done.

I'm not certain that it could even work. There's a chance that the Mk1 and Mk2 plug locations overlap a tiny bit, making the left end of the Mk1 plug difficult to mount without some effort.

I figured you would have to replace the back panel, but thats alot easier than trying to make the complete sled. You might have to weld a little but no big deal if the unit fits height and width wise.

A month or two ago I posted that anyone interested in getting a Mk.1 sled should send me an email so I could guage the level of interest. Only about four people did so, and as I managed to dig up a few mounts they have all been invited to order one.

There may be a couple more, but if we get a deluge of requests as a result of this post we definitely won't be able to accommodate all of them.

This might sound a little strange, but if you think about it, it kind of fits into the Empeg (pre-SB) philosophy of doing things.

How about making the Autocad files of the Mk1 sled "Open Source"?

Since the manufacture of the sled for the Mk1 by Empeg would be a difficult, time-consuming (and I suspect costly) exercise for little profit, then if you placed the sled design in the public domain, people with an absolute need for this could conceiveably take it to a local manufacturer with the ability to make them, or modify them to include the "side flaps" mod for easier insertion (discovered on this BBS, and fed into the Mk2 - stand up and take your round of applause, bmihulka) and any other special features that they may desire.

Empeg could retain copyright under the GPL, and mods could be fed back in exactly the same way as code changes.

Hugo's already stated that he might make the CAD files available. Though it seems to me that it would be more logical for him to simply send them privately to an individual when they are requested, rather than open-sourcing them. The number of persons who (a) have the facilities to do the work, and (b) have the motivation to do the work, is probably pretty small. Open-source would probably be overkill.

It's not economically feasable if a MK2 sled can be modified with a $10 connector. You would have the cables to solder over and some work to do on the back panel. Assuming that MK2 sleds are available, the website says they been out of stock for some time.

Would it be possible to make an adapter? If the only difference is the connector / location, maybe you could make a blank metal plate, appropriate connectors on either side and wiring running between the connectors. Imagine a "gender bender" for empeg1->2...

Did you email [email protected] or me direct? I took 3 days holiday this week, back tomorrow. I doubt anyone in sales would know about Mk.1 car mounts (I found some while clearing out old stock, they're not on inventory) so they'll have forwarded the enquiry to me - but they should have apologised for the delay at least.

The Mk.2 sleds have been in stock for months - and we get lots of orders for them. I'll have a search through the store to find whatever stock message I forgot to remove. That said, we hope to close our store entirely soon (but not until the product is available from the Rio store).

Yes, this is one of those dark alley kind of transactions - as far as the sales system is aware, you're ordering a Mk.2 sled!
