I guess I never bothered to ask if the player worked or not... I powered up the player for the first time since getting it via UPS and the diplay doesn't work. Not even the blinking LED. I can hear a drive spinning up, but who knows. Emplode isn't finding it through network broadcast, but I'll have to hook up a serial cable to know what's going on.... Sigh. Was so looking forward to putting Alpha8 on this tonight, I finally picked up a microphone.

Hmmm... No LED? Then it might be that the display board cable is loose. Even with a broken VFD or bad fuse (unless they are all gone, you will see a blinking LED. How does the boot log look?

Oh this is just classic...
I open the case... wondering why the drives look weird when I realize that there are no screws holding the sled in place... yep, the drives are just bouncing around in there (and were while shipped from CA to Detroit. And the display cable was about an inch away from it's connector....
What will I find next?
I need some screws now.

That's it, I'm ordering those screws now (as in, immediately). Been "getting to it" for months now. I should have them in a week and can mail you a handfull if you want.

Yeah, that's the one. Until I get some screws to hold the sled onto the chasis, I won't be able to tell you if it works or not. I can always return it if it doesn't.

Greetings!
Actually, that is pretty tame. You can test the player with the sled completely removed. Just boot without the drive tray in place, taking a log file. You will be able to test the display and the electronics.
Once that is verified, drop a formatted drive in place (cabled up but not screwed onto either the shock mount or sled) and try a boot. Just run the empeg open with the drive on the tray / tray balanced on the case. Granted, you will not be able to run it in the car or sealed until you have drive screws (although I have for short periods of time under AC power), but you can at least set up the empeg to your liking and load music in.
As to how it happen, it fits the pattern. Your seller probably wanted whatever drives were in there, removed the tray, got the drives out, put whatever HD (if any) was lying around into the empeg but did not bother to seal it or lost the screws.

Sorry, I shoujld have updated here in addition to the IRC #empeg channel... The player does boot up fine (havn't seen Beta11 in a while!) and the display works. My only problem at this point, at leas that I'm aware of, is that I can't put it all back together.

Beta 11? Wow - that is pretty ancient. I think there was something that worked (tuner wise) with B11 that broke later on, but I am not certain... Well, in any case, that is great news! The screws are relatively easy to get. I am glad it worked out!

Can you substitute with a different screw until the others are available?

Yeah, if you bring the drive tray to the hardware store, they should have a wall of screws and such, so you can try them out to make sure they fit the thread. I was able to find screws of the right thread for the Mk1 drive tray no problem.
In fact, if you can find some flat head ones instead of pan head ones, that's even better than the real screws because they'll be lower clearance.

I ordered boxes of 100 for each of the: Drive screws (both 5mm and 6mm length, because of varying opinion on size) Sled screws Washers
Now I feel kind of wrong handing these out because Eutronix has just made them for sale on their site. I don't want to be a jerk and undercut them. ::shrugs::
Haha, I probably WILL need them all, though, because I tend to thread the crap out of the sled screws each time I take them out. Single-use-sled-screws, practically.

Are you using the wrong screwdriver? Perhaps that would be a good addition to your order...

I guess you can add a "Darkstorm Dock" (?) and a DVD to my list. I'm not too concerned about the DVD, but I was curious about the dock.
For the record, Mark didn't have his roommate's IM name. He IM'd Justin and his roommate happened to be at the computer. Justin's IM is in his profile here.
