I installed the Rio Music Match software when I got my Karma and it's been working great (I have the most recent version). Because I already had the software installed, I didn't bother to install the Rio MM software that came with my Cali. The problem is that my Cali won't show up in the player list while running the software. The disc says "Rio Music Manager Software for Cali and Chiba", but I just assumed that it was the same software that shipped with my Karma. Am I wrong? And if not, how can I get the Cali to show up in the software (up 'til this point, I've just been transferring the music via Windows Explorer).

No, it's the same software. You say that you've got the latest version installed, so my next suggestion -- upgrade -- doesn't apply.

When you say "you're transferring using Windows Explorer", I assume that you mean using the Windows Media Player Power Toy thingummy? Maybe try uninstalling/disabling it. It could be grabbing the player before RMM gets a chance, which means that it won't appear in RMM.

Actually, Windows Explorer recognizes the Cali as a hard drive, very similar to how it recognizes digital cameras, various memory cards, and key drives. I just copy the music over.

Err, that implies that it's using USB mass-storage. AFAIK, none of the current Rio portables support mass-storage. Has this changed?

Are you sure you don't have the powertoy installed. It would make it appear in Windows Explorer. Does it have a drive letter assigned? If yes, then it's mass-storage. If no, then it's using the powertoy.

It is showing up as Mass Storage. Windows assigns it a drive letter and the player contains a folder labeled "music". I just usually drop my tunes into that folder and they play fine.

EDIT: On a whim, I removed the optional SD memory card from the player to see how Windows would react, but I ended up with the same results.

Roger,

There have been some reports on some forums that people are finding new versions of Cali and Chiba that do actually support MSC. They have a newer firmware version (2.43), and newer hardware than the old Cali/Chiba. They also ship with a newer version of RMM to support MSC.

Okay, just to double check a few things:

What firmware version is on your player? What color is your RioStick? If the answers to those questions are 2.43 and black respectively, than you have a new version of the Cali that supports MSC. The version of RMM that came on the CD with your Cali (should be 2.85) is newer than what you have for your Karma, and is required to use your Cali with RMM. The Karma will work fine with the new version, however, as long as you don't uninstall the old version first. Just install the new version on top of the old version, and the Karma drivers will stay installed and work just fine with the new RMM.

2.43 and black. But the software version is 2.61, not 2.85. I'll have to look into downloading 2.85 tomorrow to see if it fixes things. Thanks.

2.85 doesn't seem to be on the web site yet. But it should be on your Cali's install CD.

Ah, OK. That makes sense. I would have expected a bigger deal to be made about it on the Rio Audio website, which is where I checked.

As it's real mass storage, then, yes, a newer version of RMM would be needed (the old one doesn't support mass storage). As Peter points out, this is on the Cali CD.

Well, it's all a bit embarrassing. We had to update the Cali firmware for some new type of flash chip (that's what's up with the black joystick: it's tech support's clue that it's a different board design), and the plan was to roll out MSC for old Calis at the same time as the new Cali. But we got a bit overcommitted on other projects, so never got round to MSC for old Cali. Meanwhile, the only code that worked on new Cali was the new MSC stuff. So we had to put out the rather schizophrenic firmware update you now see on Rio's site, which upgrades old Calis to the latest non-MSC firmware (1.x) and new Calis to the latest MSC firmware (2.x). Under those circumstances it'd be confusing as all hell if we said "Cali now supports MSC", so we deliberately aren't saying that.

Actually, 2.61 is the version on my CD, same as on the Rio website.

If so then that's potentially a big problem -- I'll get it looked into. You should definitely have got 2.85.

That looks like the right format of number to me.

Thanks.

Thanks, we're investigating. In the mean customer care should be able to provide you with the correct software, or send me an email.
