we were driving back from bowling and i noticed some smoke. as we continued to drive i could tell we were getting closer. i was getting excited cause i love fire.
as we pulled up the fire trucks were arriving. we stopped behind one and watched a dude get out of it and run to the shed that was on fire. he came running back as we started to drive around the truck
he jumped in the truck and started honking his big-ass horn at us to get out of the way
we scooted around the block (passing the fire station, not 40 yards from the fire) and parked
i got out and walked up to the spot in the video and started recording
my female companion walked up and said 'you can feel the heat from here' (you can barely hear this in the video)
i said 'im not sure if thats the fire or just normal arizona heat.'
in the video you can hear my voice change in pitch as i turned my head. i wasnt looking when the explosion occurred. i dropped to my knees pretty quick when i heard it, though

What codec do I need for that? I only get sound in WMP.

it was encoded with the xvid mpeg-4 codec. divx will probably suffice, but i would recommend xvid

I wish Windows Media Player would automatically grab Divx and Xvid codecs like it grabs the other codecs. It really sucks when I play a video and just get sound.

AVICodec linked to xvid.org but only the source was available from there. Further searching produced this:

That's the other problem with the Xvid codec. When you google to find it, just using "Xvid" isn't enough, you have to say "Xvid binaries" to find what you're looking for.

I just installed one of the packs they link to on this site. Very helpful considering it's the wrong domain Most of the files I play these days are in xvid. It's a very good codec.

Of course, I could also just download the file and play it in mplayer and not worry about codecs. Oh how I love mplayer

Mplayer & Xvid is great until someone wraps things up in a .mkv wrapper! It took me a few days to: a)figure out which codec was missing and then b) figure out how to find said codec so I could play (deleted: currently-in-theatres-movie-name-here)! I think I have every codec known to man on my machine after trying to fix this. The secret to my movie was installing the Realplayer's most recent release (if you hunt you can find the corporate/less-intrusive version). The codec I needed was not part of any codec bundle known to man.

Video Help and doom9 usually have everything you need. Nimo's Codec Pack is not being updated any longer, but you could start with the latest version of that as well.

I generally use Nimo's Codec pack, making sure to uncheck the Divx and Xvid install options. It caused problems for me at one point when I tried to update the Divx version. I think the new version installed in addition to the old one instead of over it.

Yep, I went through all that and none of the common codec packs helped (I installed many of them). The Matroska Video file (.mkv) rendered audio once I'd installed DirectX9, but the video was impossible until I'd installed Realvideo 6. I tried the codec (after finding out what a drv4 codec was courtesy of http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/codecs-status.html) alone, but it wouldn't take until I did the full boat install. I have to say that the corporate version of Real's product (soul-sucking registration required) is not at all obnoxious - no ads nothing (screenshot attached).

One side benefit of mass codec installs is that pretty much anything plays on my machine now!

What are you using to play the video after all that? Real player? I'm still trying to figure out how to get mplayer to act as the default for streaming video.

No, ironically Realplayer won't touch the .mkv file (a bittorrented film - the copy is local, not a stream), but mplayer, winamp and WMP 9 all play it no problem (well things are a little wonky with WMP9). Go figure...

I don't have any idea about how to help you with streaming defaults, I just barely got this lot working!

Heh, when I first got an mkv file, I installed all the things I was told to by some site. The only player it "worked" in was WMP (I use 6.4), and it only played the Japanese audio track with Japanese subtitles and the video was upside-down Then I got some ffdshow thing and it all worked out.
