While sitting at traffic lights this morning, there was a numpty in front of me blipping away. As the lights changed to green he slipped his car into reverse and floored it - right into my beloved Scooby!!

He was going to drive away till I cornered him for details - turns out he is a young lad who works for a garage - picking up and delivering cars. He wrote out the details, grinning all the while, then asked me for an address (the delivery address for the car)

Did not even vaguely care about the damage to my bonnet/grill or the back of the car he was delivering, probably as it will all be covered by the garage.

I am sorry to hear this! What an idiot!!! Reverse and floored it!!! And he was going to run! Damn.

Insurance rant: In New Jersey, because the damage was done to the front of your car, you would automatically become the "liable party" for insurance purposes! You would have to get a police report explicitly stating that you were completely stopped and the idiot reversed into you in order to avoid increases in insurance premiums and full blame for the incident...

I know - luckily I was just at the offices of one of my clients and there were many witnesses. Trying now to weight up the claim against heightened premiums...<sigh>

Err. His fault = no increase in your premium.

Claim against _his_ insurance.

Sometimes the insurance companies don't care who was at fault. They put it down as an accident. (At least in the US they will.) Avoid letting you ins co. know if at all possible...
I had to fight for months to get Allstate to realize that the windshield chips they gladly covered were not accidents. My agent fought the underwriters for me till they removed them as at fault accidents. Lesson learned, forget the offers by insurance to cover windshield chips, they screw you for it later.

From what I hear, in South Carolina it is against the law for them to count windshield replacements for chips, etc...as at-fault accidents. At least that is what I was told by both my insurance company and the guys who replaced my windshield.

The problem seemed to lie in the fact that a human being wasn't doing the underwriting, a computer was. They also kept claiming a pedestrian/vehicle accident was my fault when it wasn't. When my agent finally got a person to review it, the premium came back in line with the previous year's amount. It was more than double at first..
They had it as 5 at-fault accidents; 3 windshield chips, pedestrian/vehicle accidents and a couple other incidents ( I think I was rear-ended too.) It was a really bad year and none of it was my fault...
Why they have the computer calculating it blatantly wrong, I couldn't hazard a guess, I mean insurance compaines are honest, right?

I wonder if it's purposely done like that so you automatically get shafted if you don't actually make a fuss? I'm sure some people would just assume that it went up because they had any kind of accident and let it be.

Insurance for those in the military or related. Actually, the rules to qualify are you have to either be in the militar or directly related to someone who has it. That's how I got it- my Grandfather was in the Navy, so my mother had it. Now I qualify. It's great insurance. Not the best rates (not the worst either) but they handle claims effeciently and effectively while making you feel like they're really on your side.

When I got rear ended I was contacted by the insurance company of the moron that hit me a couple of days after the accident. They paid for the whole thing including a rental car for a month while they decided what to do. I didn't even tell my insurance until I had to call and give them the info about my new car.

In Minnesota they cannot raise your rate for a comprehensive claim such as glass.

Does working as a civilian for the military count? Might be a benefit to getting that job on the air force base near here...

Unfortuantely, no- or at least I don't think so. If you married a girl who had it you'd be able to get it, but it's not worth all that!
