I have (as you all know) a '91 Rover Mini 1000. It's the old Leyland A-series iron block and head, with hard alloy seat inserts for unleaded.

When I start the car, it produces a big cloud of oil smoke - it is oil, not rich mix 'cos the smoke is blue and it pongs - which stops after a few seconds of driving. It's not burning oil under normal driving conditions and doesn't smoke - except when starting after standing for a while.

Now I'm pretty sure I know what the cause of this is, but I am going to pitch it here anyway to see if I get any other opinions - to which I am always prepared to listen.

So, anyone?

Valve stems/seals are the favorite. Less likely, it could be an issue with the crankcase breather. Remotely, it could be the beginnings of leakage past the rings. Head gasket highly unlikely - it would smoke all the time.

You know it's valve guides and seals. I'm surprised you even asked...

it does sound like stem seals, but it would be a good idea to make sure that the breather system is clear, and make sure your drain-back passages are not restricted. (cold, thick oil builds up in the top of the head, fat chance).

what do the sparks look like?

Actually, I think it's the defibulator modulator. Have you checked the backwash hoses leading from those? Or maybe your dilithium crystals are dirty.

OK. I know nothing about engines. I just make understanding grunts when the repair guys tell me things.
