I just installed SP2 for XP and no matter how many times I uninstall Windows Messenger, it keeps starting up everytime I run Outlook. This never happened prior to SP2...

Any ideas?

Perhaps dig in the registry to find the entries that point to Messenger, and terminate them with extrememe prejudice.

I'd say simple delete Messenger, but that irritating Windows File Protection thing would probably put it back.

How are you "uninstalling" it?

I'm not sure if this works or not, since I don't use Outlook, but using the "Set program access and defaults" seems to work to keep Windows Messenger from appearing. Trillian on my desktop is even registered in there, guess it did that when I reinstalled it for a short time for QuakeCon.

Found this suggestion via Google:
1. Open Outlook
2. Click Tools Menu
3. Click Options
4. Click Other tab
5. Uncheck Enable Instant Messaging in Outlook box
6. Click OK

Try this:
Code:

Start > Run:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

In regedit (for OE): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express

New Dword value > name = "Hide Messenger" value = 2

Not sure if that works for Outlook as well, but it's worth a shot. The first thing will definitely get rid of Messenger though.

Yep, it was enabled in Outlook.. Funny, you'd think installing an OS patch wouldn't start changing options in your programs!

Are you still using Trillian now? If not, is there a new king-of-the-hill IM client I'm missing out on?

I don't use Outlook (at home) so the Set programm access thing worled fine for me with SP1 and continued to work after updating to SP2.

The only thing I've had to do to SP2 is to open up some ports in the firewall and run a patch to some TCP library that limits the maximum number of connections that can be made at any one time (SP2 lowered this to 10 and I increased it to 50 - previously it had no limit).

Nothing new that I am aware of in the PC side. I stopped using Trillian when I made the switch to my Powerbook for all my non gaming things. That included switching to Proteus for IM.

Trillian got reinstalled on the PC when I went to Quakecon, since the Powerbook stayed in the hotel room, and the PC was on the BYOC floor.
