I have the display server up and running. I can't get the applet window to do anything. What else must be installed for this to function?

If you can see the applet window working (in other words, you can see the display of your empeg running in your web browser), but clicking the buttons doesn't work, then you're only missing the special kernel.

The kernel is a modification (based on the open-source kernel code) of the empeg kernel with Frank's IR hack applied. This is the component that allows you to click the buttons on the applet window and have them sent to the empeg. This is not required for the other parts of displayserver to function, but it's necessary if you want to click on the applet and have the empeg respond.

That kernel can be obtained at Frank's page along with everything else. To insert that kernel into the empeg's flash memory, use my logo editor program which has a kernel utility. Make sure to unzip Frank's kernel before uploading it.

For my money, just having the four buttons in displayserver isn't that exciting to me for day-to-day usage. I'm looking forward to the day when Frank's applet includes a clickable picture of the remote control, too...

Hey, Empeg guys, what are the odds of you including that IR hack as part of the original "default" kernel in the future?

Either that or it's the same thing I did wrong. I had the Java console thingy disabled in my browser.

Nick.

When I choose "empegApplet in new window", it pulls up a new window with a java applet inside. But the java applet does not display anything except a list of commands that run. Such as:

Loading Java Applet ...
Sending events to applet. LOAD
Sending events to applet. INIT
Sending events to applet. START
Opening http://192.168.0.99/empegApplet.class
Connecting http://192.168.0.99/empegApplet.class with no pXXXXXX
Firewall authentication: site=192.168.0.99/192.168.0.99:-1. XXXXXXX

Where I added X's is what I can't read(out of the applet window).

Background:
I added the displayserver 1.1(everything works here except the applet window)
I added the zimage file located in the same directory as the displayserver

What am I doing wrong?

Another question. The applet refers to a class file. empegApplet.class

Do I need this? and where to get?

Ok Update. I was using netscape to pull up the Empeg. It wasn't loading the empegapplet.class file. Why, don't know. I went back and tried explorer and it worked.

Looks great. Too cool.

Problem solved!

I seem to recall that I've successfully used both Netscape and IE to access the Displayserver applet. I don't think IE is required for the displayserver to function. So perhaps there is something wrong with the Java interpreter in your Netscape installation? Can you get other Java applets to run?

I've done this. I wrote a little xlib app that sits on my desktop and sends udp packets
to a small program running on the empeg (that feeds packets to Frank's modified IR
driver). This allows me to have a "remote control" on any computer on the network.

With some streaming software (my next ambition), this will make a simple office jukebox...

Right now, it just loads an xpm (that uses extended info to specify which remote command
to send), so I'm just using some hand-drawn ones. I'm in the middle of moving from one
town to the next, so I've not a lot of free time. It looks like sometime in February I'll be
able to clean this up and release it.

I am very ashamed to tell you I had this feature lying around for two months allready.
Brian Mihulka sent me a modified version of displayserver and applet which had the remote-control embedded in the applet. I was planning to incorporate it into the main program, but forgot about it.
I will try to get the modification in 1.1 this week.
The holidays are over, so I can spent some time on version 2.0 now, which will be a complete rewrite of the original version.

Support for 1.1 would probably be a good addition - it won't work at all at the moment (we tried today). I think it's mainly keypress and IR drivers that have changed.

Frank, I don't remember if you're in the alpha group, but if not send me an email.

Very cool. My Ipaq as universal remote motivation just went up three notches.
