anyone else notice this? i switch between a couple of different computers during the course of a week to keep up with the bbs. recently, or since the upgrade more specifically, it seems that some messages that i have read before still show up as unread. maybe i am just not exiting the page properly, but just thought i'd ask.
still loving the empeg after 5 months. my wife even likes it.

I regularly switch between two computers and everything seems fine to me. Perhaps you need to clear your cache, and more importantly, your COOKIES. Give that a shot and see if it improves things.
Also make sure that you're connecting to the pages with the extension of PHP instead of PL, since he upgraded the BBS. Perhaps some of the PL pages are hanging around, still. ___________ Tony Fabris

I was thinking maybe I was just imagining things, but I think I have seen the same behavior, but only on two or three posts. This might have happened because of an ugly shutdown when Netscape froze on me the other day...

I've seen this too several times, reading on a single computer. Usually, it's some messages from the day before appearing again as unread the next day.

In reply to:

I read the BBS on three machines - work (Netscape), laptop (IE) and home (IE). I had one problem before this board moved to PHP and I have a greater problem now.
Before the change, most articles read at work (but not all) would show up as unread (new) on the laptop or home machines. Articles read on the laptop or home machines would show up correctly as read on the other machines.
After the change, I get the problem whichever machine I use. It's not every article, but about 75% of them - read them on one machine and they show up as unread/new on the others.
Strange.

Can somebody please confirm that they are still seeing
this problem since the last upgrade to 5.1.5php.
Also if you could let me know the article number so
I can check it in the database.

I am still seeing a lot of post that show as new that I've already viewed, it started before the last upgrade and seems to be getting worse.

I am still seeing this problem.
I saw it at least four times this evening, but trying to go back and remember which posts they were... I could only come up with two. They are here and here.
They seem to be the final post in a thread that was then subsequently added to after I left the bbs on a previous day. Never more than one post erroneously reported as unread in any thread.

No doubt literally, at approx 8 post everyday for the last year :) I hope Empeg gave him that MK2 for all the effort he's put into this board supporting the player, he deserves it.

I am now seeing this problem for all posts made within the past three or so days from either of my home machines.
They now don't seem to mark any post as read, so if I shut down IE and start it up again, I still get massive quantities markes as unread.

This is very strange. I hop between a work machine and a home machine more than once every day, and I have not had this happen to me at all.

Go on, I give up. How do I clear out cookies on IE 5.5 (preferably only ones which relate to this site)?
Clearing cache hasn't helped.

How I do it is, I locate my Temporary Internet Files folder (usually an adventure all in itself, especially on Win2k), and there should be a bunch of files, some of which are cookie files. Select them and press the Delete key. It should confirm "Are you sure you want to delete the selected cookie(s)?". ___________ Tony Fabris

Paul,
I also noticed another bug:
when I try to put a less than/greater than sign in my posts, it gets swallowed by the preview screen.
ie: when I use & lt; and & gt; in my posts, the preview screen rewrites them to '<' and '>'

Before I went to work this morning I had a looksee what was happening. Before I even touched my work machine, it's broken here again. I am now seeing posts marked 'new' that I have read on both this machine and the other previously.
I wonder if it's got anything to do with both machines having the same internet side IP address (they're masqueraded through my gateway). Mind you, that wouldn't account for problems with the work machine too.
It's getting annoying now.
Ho hum.

Probbly not -- I'm having the same problem, from both my work machine (on a cable modem) and my home machine (on a 56K modem) and every time I go to the bbs from either machine I always find anywhere from two to 10 posts marked as unread that I have already read. In one instance, the same post popped up twice (on different days) as unread when I had already read it.
Even if I read all the posts from one machine, I still run across this.

Same here - single machine, I see many read->unread posts every day. It didn't used to be that bad.
More data: the number of new posts shown on the main index page is correct. Individual forums and thread views, though, show the extra unread posts.
Don't think it has anything to do with cookies. Tried clearing them, didn't help. There are only three cookies for empeg.comms.net anyway - username, password, and style.
Confuzeled,

By any chance, are you folks logging in from the main empeg.comms.net home page, or are you linked to a deeper sub-page, such as one of the old (obsolete) ".pl" files? Check to make sure that you're viewing the same actual pages on both machines.
I'm still not seeing this problem, and like I said, I go back and forth more than once a day. ___________ Tony Fabris

May I remind everyone that I said this already in the very first reply to the original bug report.
I think the .pl files still work because Paul was keeping them around to make sure the transition went smoothly.

I'm guilty of the same thing. I didn't realize it before because the .pl URLs redirect you to the .php ones automatically.

I've been looking through some www-threads code and it seems no cookie is used for state-info.
All timestamps are stored in the server's database ( I cannot find a cookie w3t_visit in my cookies file). the perl version cannot be the problem I think. It should still update the same database
It also seems the database is only updated in postlist.php...
Sounds like a problem for [email protected]Frank van Gestel
