Can anyone confirm that this is the root of the bug?

Alas, the problem is still here. One of my own posts came back to haunt me today, together with lots of others.

I have not had this happen to me at all.

Just a thought. I almost never quit netscape or logout from the BBS. The problem usually occurs after a long period of inactivity, usually when I come to work in the morning (relatively speaking) but also (to a lesser extent) during the day after I haven't been checking the BBS for a while. It never occurs if I just sit and reload the index page.

What is your usage pattern, Tony? Do you logout or close your windows often?

Borislav

Yes, I actually fully shut down my computers when I leave them. Also, I'm rarely away from the BBS for more than half a day. If I'm on the computer, at all, I have a little program that re-checks the BBS at one-minute intervals and notifies me if there are any new posts.

I don't, however, ever choose the "logout" option. And although I clear my cache and cookies regularly, I don't necessarily do it every day.

Oh, oh, oh, here's a difference!!!!! I just realized!!! It's likely that no one else does this, so this may be the difference...

Every time I connect to the BBS, I log in fresh. I do not just go to the front page and allow my cookie to do the login work for me. The reason is that I've got a hand-made URL shortcut that feeds the BBS my username and password, and that's what I use to connect. The url looks like this:

http://empeg.comms.net/php/start_page.php?Loginname=myloginname&Loginpass=myloginpass&option=Login

This means I have a fresh login each time I hit the BBS when I swap machines. This must be why I'm not experiencing the problem. So, the problem must lie in how the new PHP code treats cookies from the same user on different machines.

I'd say that the temporary work-around (until wwwthreads fixes the bug) would have to be for everyone to choose the "logout" option at the end of their browsing session. Anyone willing to try that for a few days?

Well, I've just logged out and logged back in again and... lo and behold... All the messages it was saying were unread are now correctly marked.

Bit of a pain though, but if it solves the problem....

Nick.

Hmm, I never log out specificially from the BBS, and also never suffer the issue others have described. I currently read the BBS on potentially 5 different browsers at home (depends on the machine, etc...) and 4 at work. I do usually close the window the BBS is in when I am done reading though, if that makes a difference.

Negative again. I logged out and completely shut down my browser before leaving work last night, there were undead posts in the morning.

Okay, what about if you use that "hand-constructed" URL to log into the BBS? (See my prior post)

Okay....

Then maybe you can offer ideas on a different bbs problem I'm having.

For the last several days, my bbs access speed has been dramatically erratic. I might read four or five posts in a row that snap up within 2--3 seconds, then the next several postst might take as much as 1--2 minutes apiece, then it will return to normal speeds for the next few.

Overall, my average speed is probably about 1/4 the speed I have been used to. I have the same problems with both Netscape and IE.

??

Completely different bug - the Previous/Next buttons at the top of flat view are too narrow. They look badly squished.

At least I think that's what they say - they're squished .

it seems that some messages that i have read before still show up as unread.

I am not totally sure of this... but it seems like the previously read posts that show up as unread fall into this pattern: One post from each Forum (like General, Technical, Programing, etc.) and that post will be the last post that was read in that forum in the previous bbs session, and possibly only if that session were in a previous day.

Can anyone verify this?

It certainly seems to be like this for me. One post per board, per session.

Getting really boring now.

Paul.

It's much more severe for me. Usually it's a few posts per forum, again the latest ones. Sometimes 20-30 of them go unread at the same time, when this happens I just read the latest in the "Past 24 hours" page and close the session to reset all of them again.

This is really starting to get on my nerves.

Yeah...I run the same software for a different forum and I finally got sick of it and switched back to the perl version. (It doesn't suffer the bugs the PHP version does). The PHP is still very new for wwwthreads, and that's the problem (not a lot of real testing yet). Plus I'm much better with Perl than PHP. D

All in all I think the php port has gone reasonably well.
Now it is in general use a few bugs have been thrown
up - and those that I haven't been able to fix I've forwarded
on to the author.

Performace wise the PHP version is quicker and produces
less load on the server.

I am commited to getting the bugs fixed up and will chase
this up. I'm also going to look into sorting something out
about the missing spell checker!

Regards

Paul

I have been seeing someting similar and I finally figured out that it happens when I use the Browser's navagation buttons.

Bypassing the navagation links on the web page also bypasses the functions that update the new message counts.

Well.... yes and no.

Using the browser's "back" button does cause the web page display to be "out of synch" with what's actually read, but the messages themselves are flagged as read, and if you exit the bbs and come back again, you will see the previously read messages are now flagged as having been read -- except apparently for the last-read message in each forum.

I've applied a bug fix to the bbs which may hopefully
fix the problem with read/unread posts.

Can people please delete any old cookies and let
me know how they get on.

Thanks

Can people that are still seeing this problem after
