I recently saw a news item on a Mac site about best Buy stores carrying the new Seagate Momentus 100GB drive for $199. They were recently introduced and actually had a misprint on the box that stated they were 7200RPM. Anyone see these little beasts at their local Best Buys? I'm sure these drives are not available locally in the Toronto area yet. I'd really like to get one (at that price) so if anyone spots them, let me know and maybe we can work something out as far as getting one up here to the great grey North. Bruno

I didn't know that Seagate made 2.5" drives... is this their entry into the market?

I have one in my Dell Inspiron 9100, snagged from the local shelf complete with the 7200 RPM misprint (the reason I bought it). I need the space, so I am keeping it and will look for the real 7200 drives next spring.
And yes, Samsung is just now getting into the 2.5 inch market. ST9100823A is the model.
If I see one on the shelves again, I'll snag it for you Bruno. Last I saw, they only had the one I bought.

Thanks for the offer Tom. But someone from my forum just bought it for me at a Best Buy in California somewhere. Woohoo. Originally I thought I might put it into my PowerBook and then transplant its 80GB into my empeg... But I hate taking the PB apart, so the Seagate will go straight into my player. I haven't done a drive upgrade in years.... Time to check the FAQ. Bruno

I'm debating going the other way, but still not sure. I have the 80gb 4200 in my Powerbook currently, and now a 60gb 5400 8 meg cach drive sitting out from the 9100. I will be getting some Firewire/USB 2 case soon for one of the drives. Just not sure if I want to upgrade the performance and downgrade capacity in the Powerbook.

That's the same thing the guy who bought my drive was told. When he went back he found the drive. These drives were available at Best Buy from East to West coasts. That employee sounds like he doesn't know what he's talking about.

I went back and asked about getting another one, and was told the same. Seems they just don't sell them quickly enough to justify stocking them, and the one I got had been in their system for a while.

Just got my drive today. It did a little cross-US tour before coming to me. Hehe.
Because of the misprint on the box (7200rpm) they were recalled by Seagate from BestBuy to be fitted into new packaging (or have a sticker affixed at least).
I can have someone post on a site that gets national readership to find out if they're still available around the US...

Do you have a part number or UPC number or something? My buddy works at Best Buy in the computer department (as a manager) so maybe he can hook me up. I've known him for years and it just thought of this now. We talk at least once a week and he is always offering his discount to me... I guess I never thought Best Buy had 2.5" drives.

I'll post it when I get home. Still have the box and receipt. Installed the drive last night - replacing my original boot disk. Working well so far. Tonight I'll be putting the original boot disk in place of the current secondary drive. And re-installing Hijack and my animated boot logo. Then comes the long process of loading up new music.... I also have it on good authority that Fry's just stocked them. Also cheaper than $199.
Seagate Momentus 2.5" 100GB HD (5400 rpm) The drive model number is ST9100823A-RK The part number is: 9W3277-556 UPC: 63649 00156 BestBuy stock#: 6884142
People are reporting they're still available at various BB stores around the US. Seems they usually only have 1-3 on the shelf at once.

What is a Turkey Day Blow Out? Some wierd Merka Thanksgiving ritual of which I do not know?
Anyway, it would seem that they are $175.00 from NewEgg today.

I went to the trouble of copying my Fujitsu slave contents onto my old IBM master and then trying to use the IBM as a slave... Doesn't like it. It doesn't come up in time and the message "failed to unmask IDE" comes up on the player.
I also had this message when connnecting up two days ago to do the IBM to Seagate copy, but it didn't affect my ability to read both drives from the command line.
Now when i boot the player it dumps out to the command line automatically. The player app won't start even when launched manually:
Quote: empeg:/empeg/bin# player
player.cpp : 385:empeg-car 2.00 2003/04/01.
! player.cpp : 291:MainThread::Init failed!
I can read both drive's fids directory from the command line... Time to swap back the Fujitsu so I can drive to work. Stupid me, I closed up the player before trying to boot it. Doh.
For reference, when booting, I get this:
Quote: empeg state support initialised 0089/88c1 (save to d0005000).
empeg RDS driver initialised
empeg power-pic driver initialised (first boot)
RAM disk driver initialized: 16 RAM disks of 4096K size
empeg single channel IDE
Probing primary interface...

Make sure that cable is on there tight. I've noticed lately that even with new cables, you REALLY have to make sure they are plugged in correctly. Someone mentioned using some dielectric grease (used for lightbulbs in cars) and that didn't seam to hurt.

It's definitely the drive order combination. I've swapped the Fujitsu and the IBM back and forth a few times and the IBM never works as slave and the Fujitsu always works. In fact, the Fujitsu as slave seems to get detected even before the Seagate as master.
I'm going to leave it Seagate-Fujitsu and just give the IBM drive to my brother (he can run it as a master in his empeg).
It's nice seeing emplode report 120 real GB (130 marketing GB). Tag fixing is a daunting task. And now I also have to hunt through some old drives lying around for my original MP3 backups (otherwise my only copies are on the empeg right now).

Quote: Fujitsu
Does it have one of those weird jumper settings like Western Digital of "single Master" and "Master with Slave"?
Thats gotten me a few times when working on desktop drives. It's also one of the reasons I became a big fan of cable select.

Its jumper settings look just like those of the Seagate and Fujitsu. Cable Sel on bottom, Master none and slave on right. I should have tried Cable Sel, but I'm not going to open it again just for that. The Fujitsu has been running fine all this time so I don't mind giving the (when originally bought) more expensive IBM Travelstar to my bro.
