Can someone help? I need this logo made with a transparant background but when I do it I can see the edges against a dark Powerpoint background.

That image has very soft edges, plus some JPEG artifacts. (Zoom in on the edges and see.) Was it scanned-in or photographed? If so you need to do some posterisation in Photoshop or some other bitmap package first. If it was rendered from vector artwork, you need to render it in non-anti-aliased to convert it to a GIF.

You want it so that when you zoom in on the edges you see that all the "white" pixels really are white, and all the "red" pixels are the same solid red.

Alternatively, you could convert the existing anti-aliased image into a PNG with alpha-channel; this will look better than a GIF on the browsers which support it (Mozilla, Firefox, Galeon, Safari etc) but not on the one which doesn't support it (Internet Explorer).

As Peter says though, if it is from a vector original, you're better off getting it saved directly to a transparent GIF at the size you're intending to use it at.

Another trick that you might use is to create a matte that is the identical color (or nearly identical) to the background that you intend to use. This allows one to keep the anti-aliased effect and still blend the image into the background.

For example, I just picked a nice dark blue color (Hex: 001F56) and used it to assign the matte fringe around the image (see attachment).

I called the logo designer who told me it was impossible to get it with a transparent background I also can't get any original vector art from him. Its all very strange.
