Ayes!

Seriously considering to buy a Empeg MK2a. Please PM or email me your offers. Also pleased from tips in the buying process 8-)
What is the going price for Empegs these days? Do I need to consider taxes when shipping (i believe no one in Finland wants to sell me one d=P)?

My details:
Currently I own a MK1 w/ 80GB HD, had it for ~three years.
Therefore I don't need a HD with Empeg, and preferably getting an empeg w/o the hd, since it's just extra cost for me
Living in Finland, paying in Euros.

My email address: lauri.hypponen[at]saunalahti.fi
My MSN address is the same. Mostly online at MSN after 16.30 EET.

I reely reely want a nice christmast present for myself 8-)

Not sure on the current price level - look at completed auctions on ebay?

If you buy from outside _EU, ie the US, expect/calculate with to pay a customs tarriff, say x%, then VAT on price, shipping cost and customs tariff.... in Sweden the likelyhood of a customs intercept varies IMEbetween which carrier that handles the package...

If you look at DomoKun's post (directly below this one at the moment) he's selling an empeg without a hard drive on Ebay.

EDIT: Nevermind...already sold for cheap!

I think that it's worth phoning your local customs office and ask what the tariff is.

I'd suggest that buying now from the US is favourable. Firstly the exchange rate is great for you, and secondly, December is a buyer's market as everyone is spending their money elsewhere on the holiday season.

I don't keep track of Euros but given that they track the UK Pound better than the US Dollar...

6 months ago you'd be looking at $450 being a reasonable low cost for an empeg. Not a steal, but certainly a respectable deal. At the time that would have been about UKP310. At the moment that $450 would only cost UKP235. That's a difference of 25%...

Just to continue about the taxes:

Is the taxes going to be paid for the country the empeg is going to be shipped? Or the country the empeg is leaving?

I'm a njoobie at buying stuff over country limits. What options do I have for delivery / payment combos? What's suggested and considered "safe"?
TNT and PayPal? :I I really don't know anything about these, haven't used eBay at all and so on... What do I need to consider?

Thanks for your quick replies on the subject! I'm getting even more excited about an mk2a!

In countries that have VAT (I suppose Finland is one of them - virtually all of Europe is), the tax is paid on imported goods. In the worst case you pay:

(price + shipping)*(1+duty%)*(1+VAT%)

I think that exporter does not pay anything.

When I bought my first empeg, price was over $1k, duty 10% and VAT 22%

I purchased a MK2a with NO hdd at $ 300, in october. I too payd in €, and at that time it was around € 250. Now it's going to be even less. Check on www.oanda.com for latest exchange rate. I guess it's harder to find an "empty" empeg tahn one with hdd(s), though.

Edit:
Just checked: € 226.5 . (BTW, This is just a crazy exchange rate... )

But things moving between countries inside the EU should not be subject to this. In this case the VAT is added/payed only in the "first" country inside the EU
(it used to be that the seller could get back the VAT payed if he could show that the item had been exported, as the buyer then payed VAT in his country... This might still be the case for non EU-internal transactions, not sure though

My understanding as well.

Oh oh oh.
One more question! This time empeg technical.

Can I swap the 80gb drive from my current MK1 to MK2a without any modifications? Hmm. I guess kernel upgrade has to be done? Anything else?

Suggestions, what kernel is _stable_ atm? And newest Hijack? What other goodies for mk2a?

Remember that the Kernel is stored in Flash RAM and not on the hard disk.

The hard disk contains the player software and the music files.

I'm not sure if the player software will be different between the Mk1 and the Mk2, but I'm certain that the kernel is different between the two, so it's a good bet the player software is different, too.

So yes, you will need to upgrade the player software if you swap drives between a Mk2 and a Mk1, but otherwise that should work. So if you want to do a disk builder on the Mk2 and then swap the disk into a Mk1, that should work as long as you install the correct version of the player software after you do that.

If you mean "player software" rather than "kernel", version 2.0 final is the most stable at the moment. The kernel comes with it.

After you install that, you can replace the kernel with the Hijack kernel, which is also very stable.

Ok finally got time to check the customs page in Finland. As you said, shipping is "tax-free" inside EU-countires. Outside EU Finland has the following rates:
3,5 duty%
22 VAT%

-> buying a 100$ item from US would cost me ~125$.

Thanks for you all on your help in this case.

So, I'm open to offers in EU

Hmm...That VAT is killer. I thought that the UK's VAT was bad.

$400 x 1.035 x 1.22 = $505.
$505 / 1.92 = 263 Euros.

Could be worse, Denmark has 25% VAT.
