I seem to have the rather dubious distinction of reporting the first car accident with an empeg on board.

Car is bashed (hard) my neck is stiff , but that empeg just kept on playin'.

I have played the track it was on at the time of the crash a few times since, and there seems to be nothing wrong, so so far it seems as if everything's hunky dory. For those of you who were ever worried about the shock protection in the unit, then I seem to have carried out a practical test for you that proves it's good!

Ohh, ma heed.

Yeah (curse curse curse). Not had a proper look at the damage yet as it's in at the garage for an estimate.

Just as I was going to post some pictures of it on my website - I'll do this anyway, but it doesn't look quite like the pictures anymore .

I had a premonition about this - nearly 10 years without even a minor accident, and then yesterday two near misses in one day. The first was the worst - an idiot coming up the up ramp onto the motorway swooped out across three lanes and caused everyone to brake. I was late on the brakes and ended up doing a 360 degree pirouette in the middle of the motorway. I ended up stationary, broadside to three lanes of traffic - how I missed the rest of the traffic I still don't know. I was stuck on the hard shoulder for nearly half an hour shaking in terror.

And now this - rammed turning off a main road into a hospital entrance (!!!) and I get blamed for not giving way, in spite of the fact she hit the back end of my car!

I dunno about England, but in the good old U.S. of A, if you're rear-ended, it's generally automatically considered to be the following driver's fault. Did you signal the turn?

Same in England, but Rob S is in the Netherlands. I think that's pretty much a standard thing worldwide though.

Except in the event of an "unavoidable accident"... which happened to my roommate this past weekend. Rainy conditions, guy nearly tailgating him, then a 18 wheeler sideswipes him and barrels him into the concrete embankment on the left.. the guy behind him plows into him [following too closely] and destroys his car. The 18 wheeler speeds off, leaving the scene. No ticket was issued because it was "unavoidable" which is complete crap. Everyone was OK tho, but my roomie is going to get screwed now.

My condolences, sir. I suppose now we get to see before (crash) and after crash photos...

Empeg. Takes a whacking and keeps on tracking...

hehe, i remeber getting a phone call from a guy who knew of the 'if your rear ended it's the guy behinds fault' myth. He was worried the insurance company was gonna hold him to blame for the damage to my car. Fortuantly no one was dumb about it, he was cleared and the guy 8 cars back that pushed him into me was blamed.

The unavoidable situations should only apply when it really means that. If the guy behind is following too close, thats reason enough for me to justify blame. The accident I was in back in January involved unique road conditions. My friend was driving back from Denver with me and another friend in the car. It was snowing lightly after a bad blizzard, and earlier it had rained. The slush that came from the rain and snow mix froze creating tracks in the road. The guy in front of us slowed to a stop from 30 mph due to a different accident and my friend tried to do the same. When he reliazed we were going to hit, he attempted to swerve off the road onto the median, but because of the tracks, we would have needed another 10 seconds to get out of the way. We hit at about 15 mph, pushing the car we hit 2 blocks down the road on the right before he could stop. We ended up in the median and found the SUV's bumper wiped out several critical systems in the car. He drove away, while we had to wait for a tow truck. In this situation normally my friend was at fault, but becuase of the weather conditions and the fact the guy we hit knew there was no way out of it, no fault was assigned. It's a rather interesting situation to be in to know an accident is going to happen.

As a follow up to this post, you might be glad (as I was) to find out that the Mini is in fact not as badly damaged as I thought. It has a fair bit of bent metal and broken plastic, but nothing structural was damaged.

At the time, the car span round about 90 degrees, and it felt like being hit by a truck, so this is good news. Flip will ride again! (soon)

Thanks for all the pleasant wishes, everyone.

Glad to hear the Mini will be OK.

Even if it were totaled, though, you could just go down to the local toy store and buy another one off the shelf.

Oh, which brings up a question I've always wondered about Minis: Where do you stick the key to wind those things up? In the front or the back?

Heh, A friend of mine had a Fiat 126, and used to drive round with a large "clockwork" key stuck on the back..

Sometimes he would get out at traffic lights to "wind it up"... =)

In the (small) city where I live, there's an old guy with a tiny little car- It's not a mini, but it's some little European thing that appears to actually be smaller than a Mini. I don't know what kind it is, but it's hilariously tiny. In fact, I think it's an antique of some kind that's been carefully restored. Anyway, his personalized license plate is perfect. It says: NOPEDLS
