In case anybody wonders what would posess someone to live in the "Frozen North", this might give an idea.
This photo was taken about 45 miles north of Anchorage, heading south into the town of Wasilla, a few days after Christmas.
What makes the picture extraordinary is that this kind of beauty is quite common everywhere you look in Alaska. I could have taken literally hundreds of pictures that day every bit as compelling as this one. Chances are most of the folks you see driving towards town didn't even bother looking at it.

Absolutely beautiful Of course I already understood why people would want to live up there. I don't think I could deal with the cold myself, but Alaska is definitely near the top of my places to visit someday list. -Mike

Now I could deal with the dark, but that cold is the deal breaker for me. Its bad enough driving my 72 beetle in virginia without heat. though that is a very nice picture. it is someplace i would like to visit.

I can't see the chairlifts in that shot though. They *are* there, right? Hugo

They've got those twin-jet six seater chairlifts up there, I believe...

I feel much the same about the "Frozen North", although in my case that only means Cheshire...

Probably you were inserting the link to the download PHP code, such as.... http://empegbbs.com/ubbthreads/download.php?Number=244608As opposed to inserting the full URL of the image file itself, such as... http://empegbbs.com/files/244608-101_0112_r1.JPGWhen one of the board upgrades happened, the "direct" link to the image no longer appears under the "Attachment" link, it's that PHP code now. So you have to actually open that PHP code page in a new window and THEN get the image link from that. It's an extra step now.

Ah. Probably that then, I just right-clicked the "attachment" link in my post and did "copy shortcut". I didn't actually *read* any of the text Hugo

I lived in Anchorage for three years, and find myself missing it occasionally. It is gorgeous up there, and believe everybody should at least visit there. Several of the guys I work with use to live in Fairbanks (they lose, Anchorage was a lot warmer ) and we are trying to plan a week long camping/fishing trip back up there (in the middle of summer - way to cold up there in the winter for us now ). - Tim

Not just there--as Doug notes, those are just a few of the common, garden-variety mountains in southcentral Alaska...a few miles up and down the road, though, in either direction....world-class skiing at Aleyaska, and glacier skiing by helicopter is possible even in summer as an adjunct to the fishing trip.... I should post my panoramic shot from the grocery store parking lot.
