I have a copy of a cd that when I play it it chirps. The original cd was scratched and I made a copy of it. I no longer have the original and want to know if there is any way I can get rid of the chirpping sound on the copy. Thanks in advance.

Depends on the nature of the chirps.

Your copy is a "bad" copy, period. Because you tried to make the copy from a scratched disk. There is no magical hidden music behind the chirps, they are flat-out bad digital data, random non-musical bytes.

I see two possible scenarios:

1. The chirps are in place of the music. In other words, it's like:
"A m****n day war****, mean mean stri**, today's Tom Sawyer, mean m*** pride."

If that's the case, there's nothing you can do except buy the album again.

2. The chirps are in addition to the music. In other words, it's like:
"A mod****ern day warri*****or, mean mean stri****de, today's Tom Sawyer, me****an mean pride."

If that's the case, then you might, with a huge amount of manual labor, be able to rip the CD into WAV format, and carefully cut the chirps out by hand with CoolEdit Pro.

But that's so much work, it's easier just to buy the CD again. And I don't consider that scenario very likely at all.

And rip with Exact Audio Copy to help better deal with scratched CDs in the future. It will at least let you know if it was unable to rip "error free".

I'm just tossing this idea out (since I've never tried it), but would one of those disk repair kits eliminate the scratches on the original?

Yes, as long as the scratches were on the underside of the CD and not on the "printed" side. The underside has a thick layer of plastic and usually you can buff out all but the most deep scratches. In contrast, the printed side has a very thin protective layer and is where the data is actually stored. I've saved dozens of CDs with the Skip Dr. Works on DVDs too.

It's neat (but time consuming) how Exact Audio Copy and the Skip Dr. work together. EAC will tell you were an exact error was found (say 1:12 into a song). After you run the Skip Dr. on the disk, it might get to 2:59 in the song. Some discs have required quite a few passes with the Skip Dr. to save the disc, so if I could do it over again, I'd get the motorized one.

Oh, and don't buy their "special" water. Tap water is fine.

But since he lost the original, this won't do him much good.

Actually Tony I think your idea should work because I listened to the cd today and it's a clicking sound but the music and words are still intact. I hear the clicking at times along with the songs i.e. no missing music or words.
I can't go out and buy a new copy because it's a bootleg cd of Zeppelin so the manual labor will be worth it! The quality of the show is phenominal one of the soundboard recordings I've ever heard!
