I just opened a self-seal envelope in the dark and re-discovered one of those useless oddities I read about years and years ago. Still brought a nerdy smile to my face.

Try it!

The glue will emit light when you open the envelope...

If it's anything like the envelopes from our stationers, the glue will have dried out and probably the glow with it!!!!

In the dry air of winter (or, what passes for winter in Houston), we don't generally bother with a humidifier. Still, it's dry enough for static electricity to start kicking in. If I take off my sweater with the lights out, I'll see lots of nice sparks illuminating the inside of the sweater. Amusing question: what's the source of the glue-light? Chemical? Electrical?

It's chemical. When you rip it open you're breaking chemical bonds in the glue which release the energy as light.

I'm going to have a go at work next week, although I'll have to find somewhere dark to try it.

Yeah, that's gonna look really good when someone walks into a darkened stationery cupboard and finds you giggling while repeatedly opening envelopes...

Remember to take some polo mints, so that while you're there, you can snap them to add to the illuminations

And be careful of who you invite into the dark closet with you, too.
