Not sure if this is in the right section but...

In my 2000 Civic coupe vti I have a standard DIN opening where the empeg is. Under this (in front of the gearstick) I have a space to keep my phone and coins etc and just above THAT is an "almost DIN but not quite" sized opening. It might be 1/2 DIN or 3/4 I'm not sure. But are there stereos I can slot in here or was this never intended as a slot? I'm sure I could make it DIN if I cut bits off but I don't really want to go down that route.

Thanks

Yeah, this has been discussed in the "Installation Notes" forum recently. The Honda slot is slightly smaller than double-din. But there were pictures of others who had managed to cram an Empeg and a DIN stereo in there by removing the plastic spacer bezel from the DIN stereo. You'd have to be very careful of everything you did and do a lot of fiddling and test-fitting (with the dash dismantled and the mounting cage removed). But I think it can be done.

Have a search through the Installation Notes forum for "honda" and see what you come up with.

I've seen half-DIN graphic equalizers. Not that that's really something you'd want.

Ah. Here is the discussion about Hondas and Din sizes I was talking about.

I believe belezeebub is right about this space. Attached I have a low-res image I dug up from an Australian car sales site.

On my US-built 98 Civic Coupe, I have a similar space down there, which was originally intended for the factory 6 disc in-dash CD changer. However, I have used that space to mount a normal DIN sized CD player with an AUX input.

Instead of using the manufacturer supplied "sleeve" to mount the CD player, it is instead directly screwed to the frame of the dashboard (ISO mount?), as I believe the factory changer would be. The holes in the CD player and the dash frame lined up perfectly. I originally tried to mount the empeg's sled there, but the space is a bit too wide and short to be called DIN. Sorry I don't have any pictures to give you a better idea.

It looks to me as if you have some extra plastic bits down there, so I'm not sure if what I did would be possible in your car. But given that they are so similar, I wouldn't be surprised if you were able to put a second head unit there using the same method. Do you feel like taking apart the dash to find out?

That photo shows what I mean. I brightened it slightly and used my amazing Paintshop skills to show better where it is (I will get a digital camera soon!)

You say you mounted a CD player in there? Which one?

Thanks

There seem to be two standards for car stereo spaces (in addition to the nonstandard sizes so common for factory stereos these days): the one used by East Asian car manufacturers and the ones used by the rest of the world.

The rest-of-the-world size is the size of the empeg's sled. It also matches the sleeve with which most big-name aftermarket stereos come that usually clamps onto the dash with those bending clips. This is sometimes known as Euro-DIN.

The Japanese size matches the size of big-name aftermarket stereos without the sleeve. These stereos are usually screwed into a frame that then bolts into the dashsomewhere.

There's apparently also another one, J-DIN, that's a little bit wider than ISO-DIN, but otherwise the same.

This means that it's difficult to get the empeg in East Asian cars, because their slots are too small. The empeg would likely fit in there without the sled, but that's not really an option.

Anyway, which of these standards is actually DIN I don't know. It's possible that they're both specified. But unless someone wants to purchase the specification, I doubt we'll ever know. And it's not really useful knowledge anyway.

Bitt's post is quite helpful, I think. After seeing those images and reading the referenced web page, I am quite certain that my CD player is mounted "DIN-I" style. Only two bolts are used on each side, and the trim ring as well as the sleeve is not used.

I have actually had two different units there, and so would expect a wide range of CD players to be DIN-I mountable. The first was a 50x4 Aiwa - I can't remember which model. But now I have a Kenwood: KDC-X659.

This photo will clarify exactly what I mean. Its the gap where the empeg remote is sitting. So.. DIN-I ?

I was just making a joke about how the barrel distortion from your camera lens made the empeg look like it had been bent. Hence the wink icon with my text.

So.. DIN-I ?

I'm willing to bet that it is. I know that my car was built for the US and yours was not, but the photo makes the dimensions seem exactly the same. If you get into that dash I'm almost certain you'll find pre-drilled holes (2 on each side) for a DIN-I install.

As I said before, I wasn't able to use the trim plate for the face of the unit I installed there, but since the face is black and the plastic of the console is also black, it still looks quite nice. If only I owned a digital camera to take a picture.

Also, a very wide range of aftermarket head units available appear to conform to I, E, and J standards. So you shouldn't have any trouble finding something with the features you want that will fit.
