I was trying to install the Debian Tarball Package onto my empeg via telnet.

This is the package i tried to install
http://fvgestel.dyndns.org/empeg/debian/debian-image.990822.tar.gz

I did the tar xvzf debian-image.990822.tar.gz

And it was installing the stuff and i started getting no disk space errors so i did a ctrl+c

Well after I did that and it got me back to the command line. When I type any commands it would say segmentation fault.

If i typed ls , it would say segmentation fault, for any command it woudl do that.

So I reboot the empeg now it doesn't even boot all the way. The lcd on the empeg gets to Initialise Mixer Failed then screen goes blank and if i press a button on the empeg it says Initialise Mixer Failed again and does the same thing.

Also when I try to telnet in now it says Could Not Open Connection to host.

However I can still FTP in.

Anyway to fix this, and get the stuff loaded back up normal?

Ouch! It sounds like you installed the debian image overtop of the existing empeg structure.

You should be able to use the upgrader to reimage the player without losing the data on your music partitions. You would still need to restore the player to your configuration (telnet, extra software, etc.) manually.

Does anyone have any better ideas?

So how do I install the debian package without messing up my empeg install?

Like this. Note: I have not tried this myself.

I would advise against that. There's just too much, and most of the content will not work without much labour or conflict with what's already on your player.

Unpack the tarball on your x86 Linux box (or use a PC with winzip or cygwin), collect what you need and transfer only that.

Install it into a subdir on /drive0, eg: /drive0/debian/

Then login to the player, and do "chroot /drive0/debian/" to use it.
