Greetings!

I am trying to replicate the hard drive from a single drive player to a new hard drive. The new drive is the exact same model / geometery as the old drive, and will be removed from the player as a boxed backup. I would like to clone the entire drive, partitions and all, to create an emergency mirror I can hook up if the other drive fails. I am 99% certain the following command will do what I want, but I thought I would ask, just in case:

dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdc

Note: This is not my player. I am doing this for one of the folks at the office that has a single drive player, but has no backup of their music on any system. I know... That is why I was pushing for some kind of backup...

Yup. Should work. It'll be slow on the empeg, though.

True, it will be slow. But the player will be locked in an office overhead cabinet (with good air flow) for as long as it takes. Less surgery required.

I would run down to the friendly neighborhood computer store to pick up a couple laptop drive -> desktop drive adapters (if I didn't already have them), plug both drives into the ide interface on my desktop linux box and run the command there. Something tells me that it would be faster.

Yeah, about a factor of 18X or so. But more hassle, for sure.

Cheers

Greetings!

The circumstances around the copy lead me to continue doing it the slow way. Keep in mind that...

a) this is not my player
b) the owner does not have it installed in his car yet
c) he sometimes leaves it locked in the office anyway
d) he doesn't mind leaving it for a few days if necessary
e) it is software, so I do not get caught opening "alien" computer equipment in the office

This is the ideal "set it and forget it" situation.
