Hiya. My 30 gig mk2a was in the process of synching when the power was accidentally disconnected from the unit. Now when I plug it in, it gets through Building Music Database but gets stuck on Building playlist database. I hear no more hard drive activity once it gets to this point, it just hangs there.

I'm trying to synch it again but Emplode can't find the player. I havn't tried USB yet. I'm running software version 2.00. How can i fix this?

Cables always seem to go bad just to confuse me, and are usually worth a check first. Have you also tried Jemplode or verified that it is getting an IP address. Then there is also usb and serial if you can't get ethernet working to sync the database.

Just setting up a serial connection and a terminal program might provide some insight as to what else is going on.

I'm pretty sure its not a cable connection problem or anything like that. I have not yet tried Jemplode and have to wait till I get home from work to try usb and serial.

AH. Sorry. Shoulda known the faq would have it. Hopefully I can get it to connect with USB at home since ethernet is not really working.

The solution involves neither USB nor Ethernet. It requires serial shell access.

Oh, I must have misunderstood.

"Usually, you need only to synch once with Emplode to cure the problem. If synching once with Emplode doesn't solve the problem, you can force it to rebuild the database as follows:"

I thought I might be able to try synching with USB, then if that failed I'd try going through hyperterminal instructions.

I havn't got the developer version of the player software installed though. Do you know if I'll have any problems installing the developer version while something is wrong with the database?

Right, you already said you couldn't connect with Emplode, thus you're stuck with the shell prompt solution now.

Ok. So I fnally got around to trying to fix this but I'm having some issues. You linked me here which had a link to filesystem errors, which is I think more of my problem. As explained by the line "This error can also be caused by rebooting the player during the middle of a synch operation, either on purpose or accidentally because of a crashed synch", which is what happend to me. Now mine hangs on "Building Playlist database..."

I was able to connect to the empeg with HyperTerminal and verified that I had the developer image of the 2.00 beta 13 player software. To correct the problem, I'm trying to follow these instructions:

"To correct this error, make sure you're using the developer firmware on the player, use hyperterminal to get to a shell prompt with either a Q or a Ctrl-C command, then enter the following at the shell prompt:

ro
umount /dev/hda4
umount /dev/hdc4
swapon /swapfile
fsck -fay /
fsck -fay /dev/hda4
fsck -fay /dev/hdc4
swapoff /swapfile
sync
"

My problem is with
Quote:

. When I power on the empeg in Hyperterminal, it goes through a whole bunch of stuff then pauses for a while after the following:

Sorry if that was too much info. My problem is that at no time can I get "q", "Ctrl-C" or "Ctrl-Break" to work. I can enter the commands but nothing happens. After that last chunk of text scrolls by, it just hangs there. The player shows "Building playlist database..." and I can't get HyperTerminal to respond to any commands. I hit q (enter) and it just shows a q on the screen, Ctrl-Break shows up as ^@.

Did I overlook some small step? Am I entering the commands into Hyperterminal the wrong way? I've never really used the program or had any issue like this before so it is unfamiliar terrirtory.

thx for the help.

Your problem is clearly much larger than a database rebuild now.

There is either hardware trouble, or your file system is severely messed up to the point where you can't even get a shell prompt.

You might be down to a nuke-and-pave at this point. Which, of course, won't do any good if the trouble is hardware.

Aww maaan. How the heck did I do this? From simply unplugging during a synch? If so that sucks. I really don't want to do any further damage and think I might have to send this in for repairs.

Another possibility is that you're simply not using Hyperterminal properly or it's set up wrong. For example, if the flow control is set wrong, you probably won't be able to do the Ctrl-C.

It's also possible that you're not pressing Ctrl-C soon enough.

woohoo. Well I tried it one more time after lunch, but this time i spammed Ctrl-C. I was able to follow the instructions and a couple of synchs later we're in buisness. Thanks for your help and a great faq.
