I finally received my new 100GB Fujitzu drive
I am now trying to copy fids from one ol drive to another.

From Tony's famous super upgrading guide:

Quote:
Read-write mount the disk drives. Type:
rw (Enter)
rwm (Enter)
There will probably be a pause before the shell prompt appears again

How long can the pause be? I've been waiting for few minutes, then tried again and again. What am I doing wrong?

Ok, I wasn't patient enough. According to Murphy's Law, I got the prompt immediately after posting. Sorry...

No worries. I would strongly recommend that you immediately modify your /bin/rwm to include the nocheck option!

Um, not good. Those timeouts look like a hardware issue (cable, drive or header) that are causing you trouble. It seems that all of them are associated with hda, so it might be a cable crimp issue.

As for stopping, try ctrl-c first. You do not really want to unplug (and get dirty filesystems) if you can avoidit.

Paul, I just noticed the cable is daaged! It was cratching agains the video board, as mentioned in a faq somewhere. I did check it, but when I did it was looking fine.
So, fortunately I have another one, but not here where I am. I will have to wait until the weekend to update.

Thank youf ro your help. Now, I really hope it is the cable, at least... I can see the wire underneat through the scratched surface of the cable, so there are good chances that that's where the problem is.

If you can see metal through the cable, that is likely the problem. I hope it works for you. Meanwhile, get the drives stable if possible. You might be able to get a little more life out of it and continue your testing if you can wrap the hopefully unbroken but exposed wire with electrical tape to prevent shorting.

Paul, thanks again.
Yes, I see metal through the cable. The two wires on the left are exposed. One of them seems to be damaged, while the other just exposed. I can't seem to make it work at all now: while before I could at least evetually boot, now I only get the "No Hard Disk Found - Contact Support" message.

Do you have an recommendation on how to prevent this? I had just replaced the original cable with one from Eutronix. Fortunately, I had bought three, a year ago. Clearly, while the original was not scratching against the display board, these ones are, so I guess I will have to find a solution as soon as I replace the cable with one of the remaining two...

I believe there was supposidly a specific way the cable needed to be folded in order for it to work right. maybe somebody more knowledgable in their installation could respond. I cant for the life of me remember where I read it when I installed mine.

Well, Eutronix cables are pre-folded and look very very good. I can't imagine how else I could fold it, but maybe there's some trick I don't know/remember. I can't find any suggestion in the FAQ. Maybe some insulating tape and plastic protection of some sort could work...

The tape and plastic will work short term, but the longer cables from Eutronix are the best answer.

From the drive upgrade guide...

Inspect the IDE cable and make sure it's OK. On some early Mark 1 models, a messy solder on a jumper on the motherboard might have scarred the cable. Repair this as necessary. In my case I had to file down the jumper, resolder it, and protect the damaged cable with electrical tape. If you have to do this, use extreme caution and don't let any filings stay inside the case.

I know, not exactly the same situation, but the same concept.

Thanks Tony. Yes, the guide included also this aspect. There really is nothing I could find in the upgrade process that is not mentioned in the guide
As a matter of fact, I did not notice the damage immediately because I did not look, and the drives were initially working; they actually did until I started to copy fids. Well, as I said I have two more Eutronix cables, which I will replace in the weekend, as I am now out of town.

Now, my concern is that if this Eutronix cable was damaged scratching against the display card, maybe the others will have the same problem. I need to find something to protect the new ide cable, as this one is really badly damaged. I can't think of anything else than a plastic surface to be put between the display board and the ide cable. Tape would only resist temporarily...

Oops, I'm sorry! I thought you were referring somehow to the HDD jumper! In my case, there's a protruding soldering point on the display board that is right against the ide cable. I am really not experienced enough in soldering to do anything like that. If that is the case, I'll have to ask expert friends...

It was in fact the cable. New cable, all has worked so far. I am currently copying fids from old-drive-1 (30GB) to new-drive (100GB), via the
cp -auvfx /drive1/fids /drive0/ command.

I have the impression it is faster that it would be via ethernet (is it supposed to? What is the theoretical transfer speed via ide channel?), which is really good. In an hour I should be done and move on to old-drive-2 (still 30GB) -> new-drive. I've upgraded a few times in the past, but for some reason I had always used ethernet. Again, thanks Tony for another good suggestion on The Guide

I just realized that since I will be using ONE drive only, the part of the cable scratching the display card is not going to be "used" (the scratch was very close to the ide connector for the slave drive), and therefore I should be able to fold it in a way that it is preserved intact, far from the display card.

I just did the exact same copy between drives to get all the stuff off my old 30GB onto my new 80GB. It is faster than ethernet but only marginally (twice to be precise) since the empeg can't DMA to the drives.

I see about 700kB/sec over ethernet and I timed my drive to drive copy a few times and it worked out be exactly 1.4MB/sec every time.

Doing it with a PC is much faster as it uses DMA unlike the empeg as Shonky points out. Laptop IDE adapters are cheap and you can do it using just a Knoppix/whatever Linux CD if you have two adapters.

Shonky, I confirm, 1/2 of ethernet time, that was true in my case as well. Well, still an improvement.

I also copied the dynamic data partition, successfully!! Have I already thanked Tony for the upgrade guide?

I'ts not over yet...

I am adding all MP3s I had to keep on my PC when waiting for the new drive.

I starterd the sync form emplode, and as it started to actually transfer the first MP3, the sync process froze. After a long wait, I decided to kill emplode and restart. As usual, the empeg rebuilt the database at reboot.
I then started emplode for the second time. As it connected to the empeg, it started to check media, as I expected. It took very long, according to the FAQ. First time with 100GB, for me. However, after waiting long, and before both reading the FAQ and the completion of the media check, I decided something was wrong. So, while emplode was still checking media, I disabled the periodic disk check from hijack (yes, I did access hijack and change the option while emplode was checking. Was I silly and naive, besides impatient?). Then, I killed emplode, unplugged the empeg, hoping that it would not check the disk again.

The empeg reboots, rebuilds the database, I restard emplode, and... checking media again. So I decide I have to let it go till the end of the process. I finally get back to emplode. All refs are at least 1, so it seems nothing had been transferred. I proceed and upload just one CD, to make sure it works. Hit "Sync", and again, checking disk integrity during sync. It took less then before, and finally the MP3s are uploaded. No errors. after that.

Happy, and believing the media check would be done for 20 more resyncs, I proceeded to uploading more MP3s. I eventually clicked on Sync, and... Checking media again!

I am now hoping I don't have a faulty drive, and my assumption is that I shouldn't have disabled the disk check from HiJack WHILE it was checking. So I re-enabled the disk check from HiJack, and I am now waiting that this sync process completes; and I am crossing my fingers.

Now, I guess my question is: am I making any sense, or is my drive faulty?

I think the option in Hijack only disables periodic checking. The ext2 filesystem can remember how long it was since it was last checked. There is a setting to disable this (or at least make it super long) in the file system.

Probably most of your file system checking is due to unclean mounting of the drive (resetting while in read/write mode). I don't think Hijack can stop this.

However, that said, I rarely do reboots while in read/write mode and I still get disk checking happening most times I add new tunes. This is generally spaced by weeks, so in my case it's possible the Hijack function isn't working properly for me. I haven't really bothered to check since I usually sync at work or overnight, where I can walk away and it can take basically as long as it wants.

As for the speed, I notice it Roger's drive guide, one of the options specifies "sparse superblock" to help speed up fscks. I can differentiate betweent the two drives fscking in jemplode, and one of them is significantly faster than the other possibly due to it being set up manually whereas the other was done by the disk builder. I've been meaning to format the other drive similarly in hopes of speeding up the fsck.

Not really sure how that helps you though with it freezing during a sync. Put a serial cable on it during the sync to see if there are any drive errors appearing.

Thank you Shonky. Well, now it does not seem to freeze any more. My only problem is that last two mp3 upload sessions required media check, and that really is time consuming... Not to mention that I still don't know why...

Thank you transaafl. I had actually checked that FAQ. Well, I have this error:

EXT2-fs warning: checktime reached, running e2fsck is recommended

which seems very similar to this one mentioned in the faq:

Quote:
"EXT2-fs warning: maximal mount count reached, running e2fsck is recommended"

Unfortunately, it does not seem to go away after next resync. Every resync it needs a drive check.

Should I proceed with

Quote:
ro
umount /dev/hda4
umount /dev/hdc4
swapon /swapfile
fsck -fay /
fsck -fay /dev/hda4
fsck -fay /dev/hdc4
swapoff /swapfile
sync

all the same?

Yep well one is due to rebooting without unmounting and the other is the one Hijack gets around.

Doing the...
Code:
ro
umount /dev/hda4
umount /dev/hdc4
swapon /swapfile
fsck -fay /
fsck -fay /dev/hda4
fsck -fay /dev/hdc4
swapoff /swapfile
sync

...certainly won't break anything and is worth a try in my opinion.

Agreed. The manual fsck of all drives should clear that flag. Just make sure that it does not return any errors.

This one is harmless. It just means that it wants you to do a check on the filesystem because the time since the last one exceeded the set limit. Hijack disables this for you.

Quote:
Tried to mount /dev/hda4 as reiserfs but got error 19

It will always give this error because we don't use ReiserFS. I think the Central does however which is why it attempts to mount the music partition as ReiserFS.

Just means it's trying to mount the second HD but couldn't as you don't have one.

In this case it's talking about the filesystem on the initrd. As this never changes, it's not a problem. Whatever's causing your excessive-media-checks problem, it's not one of those three lines.

1) I have a feeling mine also does this.
2) The reiserfs line is normal and has always been there.
3) Not so sure about the hdc.

Have you tried doing a small sync yet? I think you might be OK regardless of those messages.

Edit: Well yeah I walked away for a bit before hitting post...

Greetings!

Okay. The music partition is fine. The warning is happening with the root filesystem. Do you have any software running (third party) that is keeping the / filesystem open when you try to sync? It is not labeling it as dirty... Hmmm...

I would try the "fsck -fay /" again, but I am not sure it will help...

Great! The problem seems to be gone since after the manual disk check procedure!
I'm glad to know that those are not relevant errors. Thank you all! For the recors, I am running Alpha7+Hijack 329, and no other software.

I remember Alpha8 having a problem with EQ, which used to produce really bad noise when adjusted. Was this fixed on Alpha9? I remember I had some issue with that too, but since I can't remember precisely what, I'd be happy to give it a try once more, if the eq bug is not there any more.

Alpha 9 was definitely bad. The download page (http://www.empeg.com/v3alpha) specifically says not to use it.

I use Alpha 8 but don't use the eq much (at all really). The main problems I have are:
- tracks get randomly marked.
- bookmarks are very flaky.
- too may tweak order functions cause hangs at the end of the current track sometimes.

In terms of crashing and general stability, it's pretty good really. Basically it's the only way I can play oggs and also have the cross fade.

Alpha 7 didn't seem to save the running order properly which was hugely annoying for me.

Ok, I am now thinking there must be some other problem here.

It seems that every time I do a Sync "after a while", the process stops when uploading the playlists. The Sych eventually times out. So I need to go through this:

ro
umount /dev/hda4
umount /dev/hdc4
swapon /swapfile
fsck -fay /
fsck -fay /dev/hda4
fsck -fay /dev/hdc4
swapoff /swapfile sync

as you suggested, everything seems to be ok and I can upload all the mp3s I need to: some times 2 mp3s, some times 3 or 4 albums.

Then weeks pass by, and when I try to upload mp3s, I'm back at the beginning. I can't figure out what this can be.

I am using emplode 2.00 final with Alpha 7. Now that I think about it, could that be a problem? As a matter of fact, I've been doing this since I installed Alpha7, until very recently, when I upgraded to a 100Gb drive. Since that time on, I've been going through the problem described above.

Any help is appreciated, of course. Thank you in advance.

Edit:
In emplode, I get this error when "Uploading PLaylists":
Task: initializing
Warning: %anyplaylistname% could not be synchronized., Connection timed out (Error 0x8004003e)

"Estimating Trasnfer Size" completes successfully.
"Uploading Tunes" instead gives me the same error as "Uploading PLaylists"

This happens with Ethernet connection. I am realtively sure it happened in USB too, but I may be wrong since I very rarely use USB.

The sync timeout was taking very long to occur for each song, and I was uploading 13 tracks. I am at work and I had to stop the syc brutally by turning off the player

Now, just in case it helps, here's what the player says at reboot:

When I reapplied power (after killing emplode), the player of course rebuit the database.
Thrying to rule out emplode 2.0 from the possible problem souces, I decided to use Jemplode (latest version) and see what error I would get.

After starting Jemplode, the serial output on the player was:

Finally, emplode returned this error:

"Download problems
The following problems occurred during download:
There isn't a file with FID 2 on this device"

I have no clue what it means?! A fid file named "2" ? If so, why would it be a problem and how can i solve it?

I also tried to sych with Jemplode before going through the

ro
umount /dev/hda4
umount /dev/hdc4
swapon /swapfile
fsck -fay /
fsck -fay /dev/hda4
fsck -fay /dev/hdc4
swapoff /swapfile sync

procedure. As usual, checking media was required, and the album I was uploadeng was eventually added to the root and not to the playlist I chose. There definitely is something weird here.

Ok. I decided to go through all passible checks that came to my mind.

So,

1. Entered the shell by pressing q via com port, and proceeded with the file system check.

empeg:/# umount /dev/hda4
empeg:/# umount /dev/hdc4
umount: /dev/hdc4: not found

is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193 <device>

I started Jemplode. It rebouilt the database. Then it complained I had no fid n. 2.
I could then upload a number of tunes without any problem. However, from the serial port output, I got this:

Still, on the UI of jemplode all seemed ok.

Then, I tried to uploade more tunes, and the first playlist stopped at 20%, as I coul read in jemplode. Now, it is there, sopped. I am trying to wait until I get some error. I will have to go through the entire file system check again. I think there is some problem with alpha7/ethernet.... I don't think it is cabling, since this happened with different cables in different locations.

If you're getting errors from fsck when checking /, you should reapply the upgrade image, and then try again.

It's possible that your hard disk is on the way out, however.

I'll try that, Roger. Thanks.

For the record, after getting those errors on fsck -fay / , I fsck -fay / again an no errors showed. I suppose they were fixed?

On the filesystem metadata level, probably. However the "fixes" might have corrupted the player binary and other stuff, so it's safest to reapply the upgrade image.

Isn't there a version 2.10 of emplode that is supposed to be used with 3.0 alpha, not 2.0?

I've had similar problems with my units running v3alphas. Switching between emplode 2.0. emplode 2.1, and jemplode seemed to be part of the events leading up to it. Now I stick just with jemplode 69.0...1 and the biggest issue is that sometimes it stalls at the 20% point of the first update.

The only improvements in 2.10 are support for the newer file types. Other than that, it's actually less stable -- something broke, and I didn't manage to fix it. Unless you need to upload FLAC or Ogg files, use 2.0. If you do need to upload FLAC or Ogg files, use JEmplode.

I just re-applied the Alpha7 on my empeg, and at the end I got this error:

Error "Could'nt Find Pump" occurred during stage 0x20 .

Wha does this mean?

However, my empeg seems to be working fine, and all playlists are there.

The long selftest will tell all.

The older error logs indicate one bad sector at around the 100MB mark on the disk. The other messages are less clear, but it does seem that this drive has been used in another computer (other than the Empeg) at some point.

Cheers

Mark, that is comforting.
As to the fact it was used somewhere else, that is instead a surprise. I bought it as new few months ago. And, I would have been happier without the bad sector.
Well, as long as it works well and for long time on my empeg, and the bad sectors don't increase in number, I'm happy enough.

Thank you!
