Can anyone recommend a program for video file format conversion.

Specifically I want to convert the liberated (drm removed) tivo to go mpeg2 files to something else like mpeg or divx maybe.

I use TyTool to extract and convert to VOB. From there I use Dr. DivX to go to DivX if necessary, or I just burn straight to a DVD.

Not sure if that will work with Tivo To Go files.

I believe that the long answer to your request is to be found on the DealDatabase Forum.

Like you, I'm also interested in a convenient way of performing TiVo video extraction. A year or so ago, it was a bit hit & miss aligning the video and audio streams and certainly a hacker's rather than a consumer's solution. After a brief glimpse, I believe that has all changed but I have a few networking infrastructure things to finalise here before I'm ready to attempt video extraction!

In order to reach the proper target readership, I think this thread title probably should have included words like "TiVo, video & extraction" - if you don't get some authoritative replies here then I suggest trying again using those terms. Meanwhile, I'll sit here quietly on the sidelines!

I don't think I need the tytool part becuase I already have plain mpeg2 files without DRM.

I tried the divx converter program

Link. It works but I would like more options.

I don't know what Dr divx was like and they stopped offering that. With this new program you just get a window to drag files to and you can choose from some preset quailty settings. (unless I am missing some options menu ?)

I'm not having a problem with the extraction. I have a series 2 so I just have to use the tivo desktop program to get the files to my computer. After that I used this program to get rid of the drm stuff and leave me with a mpeg2 file.

I just want to convert the mpeg2 files to something smaller. (file size wise)

If you're using Linux, try transcode. It's the swiss-army-knife of the conversion world.

I'm actually using TyTool as I'm reading this thread! The menu creation options are limited, but it's a great program! Tytool will export to MPEG2 if you want to skip the DVD step.

EDIT: As I read your later replies, I see that Tytool won't really help in your situation.

I am also having the same issue. Sortof. I use Nero to burn the images, but I have this one file that's a 4.9G Mpeg-2 file. Nero just says it can't fit it onto a disc and as of yet, I can't find a good transcoding solution for mpeg-2.

DVD-Shrink help you fit it onto one DVD. It's a great program.

Ahh, I agree, but only from an ISO or DVD-9. I backup every DVD I buy and never play the original. 2 reasons. First, I can scratch the copy all I want and be out 40¢. Second, I can record JUST THE MOVIE and watch it without having to wade through 5 minutes of FBI Warnings and commercials that they won't let you skip through.
