Can anyone recommend a freeware package of roughly equivalent functionality to DreamWeaver, running on Windoze? URLs would help.

I have been pleased with other Coffee Cup free products before. Their editor might be what you're looking for.

Ahhh, Tony, always the purist! Try the DOS Editor for a challenge...

Seriously, if you are wanting to work with Style Sheet stuff try ... NVU I have heard some good things about it, but I have not used it before...just tinkered...

I normally used notepad as well, but have been using ultraedit cause of the color coding you can configure in it for my html/php/mysql stuff.. makes things much easier to read when you got hundreds of lines..

Yeah, actually, I use ultraedit, too. I do love seeing sites with the "Made with notepad.exe" logo on them, though.

It probably would, but then it is not free. NVU is. And I was pretty impressed reading the info on the site...however I am easily impressed...

I've started using Mozilla's Composer. It's beyond easy. It's also pretty limiting, but set everything up as tables and formatting is way easy.

I've bought Dreamweaver but am too busy to really learn it and forget what I knew between uses. My early web pages were done in MS Word and edited in notepad.

Whilst I've edited sites with notepad, if I've got to knock up a page with tables and stuff in them I find an purpose made editor makes it much quicker.

jEdit is a java-based text editor with syntax highlighting, smart indentation, code completion and a plethora of plugins you can install to do things like validation, tidying, etc. I use it as my main text editor for c/xhtml/xml coding. A bonus is that if you ever decide to switch PC platforms (win/mac/linux) you will always have your favorite editor.

Thanks for the recommendations.... but.....

I don't think you've understood what I meant. I am not interested in just an HTML editor, but I also want an HTML site management/project maintainance tool - the one I have used is DreamWeaver, but I can't afford the $$$ it costs to buy the current version.

So - given this clarification - any ideas? You can't tell me Dreamweaver has corned the market for this sort of thing?

How big is the site ? If it is small (less than 50 pages) then Fog Creek's CityDesk might work for you.

What problem are you trying to solve? Is it a personal site? A corporate site? Is it just somewhere to post a few things every now and then? What level of control do you want?

Do you really need DreamWeaver-like functionality?

In the end, I end up doing my websites either in Notepad (well, TextPad), by using Visual Studio 2003, or by using a CMS system (I use drupal). They all solve different problems. What problem are you trying to solve?

Need to:

- up and download website content (HTML/CSS/Image), by FTP or some such
- manage the website as a project locally on my PC in Windows
- locally edit HTML/CSS content
