So, say I'm looking for bootlegs. Social Distortion, The Clash, maybe Jane's Addiction come to mind, but, well, more than I have. I'm at a loss. Where should I be looking that I don't know about?

Hm, aren't there millions of "tape trading" circles on the Internet? Must be plenty of band specific newsgroups (bootleg newsgroups and JA, Clash) to post in. I've seen band specific forums ( JA, Clash?) with bootleg trading sections.

Usenet may even have bootlegs in their binary sections if you're patient enough to wait for it. You could even try Bit Torrent for concerts, but I don't know links to any non-spyware'd search engines...... but I can't imagine these downloads are legal.

The problem with trading is one of bootstrapping. I need to start somewhere...

ebay has had every bootleg I've cared to search for. Try searching for the label name, if you know it.

Tom's asked that we not link to questionable music sharing sites. Link removed. Sorry. -wfaulk

Have you tried Furthur? It's for "legal" bootlegs.

I have a few bootlegs that I have aquired through fan sites using "Blanks and Postage".

If you can find the right community, I am sure you can find someone who can help you get your collection started. B&Pers seem to be more concerned with quality than the usual mp3s on the ftp stuff too.

I'm looking for bootlegs

One of my cow-orkers is a major bootleg collector and producer. (He has very sophisticated recording gear that he smuggles into concerts. In 2004 he did a summer-long concert tour all over the country)

He recommends db.etree.org as a starting point.

Have you seen how many shows are being recorded via the band's wireless IFDs? I'm amazed that this isn't being stopped. There are many NIN shows where people are recording the in-ear audio being sent to the guitar player or Trent Reznor. Usually you can tell my the mix (which instruments are loudest) which band member's feed you are hearing. Usually the frequency response is limited because a full fidelity feed isn't needed, but the clarity is amazing.
