Does anyone know if it is possible to turn the arrow off while using the round brush? I'm having problems following a line that travels upper right to lower left because there is an arrow on the brush icon in the lower right of the circle.

Photoshop is about the only Windows app I still use becase I'm unbelievable faster with it than Gimp.

Not that I'm aware of. Try drawing your line in the opposite direction.

Damn. I watched Pulp Fiction again the other night and thought I would be witty and make a reference to "bring out the gimp". So I Googled it to get the correct wording and discovered that I'm about the 10 millionth person who thought he would be all cool and witty by using this program as a Pulp Fiction reference.
