I recently bought a 1999 Pontiac Sunfire GT and when I test drove it, it seemed that the (automatic) transmission would seem to hesitate between first and second.gear...but it didn't do it all the time. So, since I was desperate for a car (because I crashed my old one and a replacement was hard to find) so I bought it. Now it seems it that it does it more often. is there anything I can replace or check on the car to find out? there seems to be no dipstick to check the transmission fluid....

Go to your local Autozone (or whatever chain auto parts place is nearby) and get a Chilton's manual (there's a few other brands too) and read up on how to check your transmission fluid. If it's low or old it can cause the problem you describe. Sometimes checking the level involves getting under the car, removing a nut and feeling for the oil with your finger. The manual should be able to tell you to check the fluid level. Of course more serious issues can cause what you describe, but check the fluid first. Check the owner's manual to see when transmission fluid replacement is called for.

ps: Or you could just to to Jiffylube and tell them to replace the tranny fluid; probably about $70-$80.

as mentioned, first thing to do is check the transmission fluid. check it warm and running in park, if possible or unless the instructions suggest another method. NEVER over-fill it. you're better off a little low than a little high on the fluid level.
if that doesn't do it, have the kick-down cable (if equipped) checked / adjusted. next thing to have checked up on is the 'band adjustment', not something that can be done without some effort. best to take it to someone that specializes in transmissions.
it could also be caused by a clogged filter or worn seals on the governor.
many late model transmissions use a control unit, this can be scanned for error codes.
